Arts/Humanities/International

Program: General Research Grant Program
Agency: American Philosophical Society
Next Deadline: Jan. 1, 1994
Awards support basic postdoctoral research for at least one year in all areas of knowledge. Grants help defray costs such as travel and the connection of the investigator to objects of research. Maximum award levels range from $4,000 to $5,000. Program has Jan. 1, March 1, July 1, and Nov. 1 application deadlines. Submit requests in writing for materials and information. Inclusion of proposed budget with inquiries is strongly encouraged.

Program: NATO Fellowships
Agency: Council for International Exchange of Scholars
Next Deadline: Jan. 1, 1994
Two types of fellowships are offered. NATO Fellowships support scholarly research primarily dealing with Alliance security and political issues, and are open only to citizens of NATO countries. Democratic Institutions Fellowships support research on democratic institutions and their functioning and are open to citizens of both Warsaw Treaty Organization and NATO countries. Applicants must pursue their work in one or more NATO countries.

Program: Dissertation Fellowships for Area Research
Agency: Social Science Research Council
Next Deadline: Jan. 1, 1994
Fellowships support doctoral dissertation research in the social sciences and the humanities to be conducted in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Near and Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Western Europe (November 1, 1993 deadline), Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union (December 1, 1993 deadline), and Korea (January 1, 1994 deadline). Support is offered for nine to 18 consecutive months of field research. Awards vary by country.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Nonprofit Sector Research Fund
Agency: Aspen Institute
Next Deadline: Jan. 1, 1994
Supports basic and applied research on the nonprofit sector in the U.S. through research grants (up to $50,000), larger scale research (up to $100,000), and doctoral dissertation research grants (up to $20,000). Principal areas of interest are democracy; role of nonprofits; advocacy; philanthropy; governance; public accountability; financial resources; nonprofit workforce; and international dimensions of nonprofit activities.

Program: Media Research, Production, Distribution, and Training
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: Jan. 3, 1994
Supports educational advancement of individuals with disabilities through: research on the use of educational media and technology; production and distribution of media; training in use of educational media for instruction; and utilizing educational media to reduce illiteracy. FY 94 priorities and tentative application deadlines are closed-captioned sports (2/4/94); broadcast and cable description (2/3/94); educational video (1/3/94); research on description; research on captioning as language development tool; symposium (2/4/94); and described home video (3/3/94).

Program: Secondary Education and Transitional Services for Youth with Disabilities
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: Dec. 17, 1993
Supports research, development, demonstration, and evaluation projects toassist youth with disabilities in the transition from secondary school topostsecondary environments. FY 94 priorities and application deadlines are research projects on student involvement in transition planning (4/8/94 deadline); outreach projects (3/28/94); and model demonstrations with school drop-outs (12/17/93). Health/Mental Health

Program: Clinical Studies of Safety/Effectiveness of Orphan Products
Agency: Food and Drug Administration
Next Deadline: Dec. 27, 1993
Supports clinical trials for determining safety and effectiveness of drugs, biologics, medical devices (including in vitro diagnostics), foods for medical purposes, and veterinary products that may be useful in treating rare diseases but lack commercial sponsorship. Also supports tests of already marketed products for treating diseases for which they are not currently labeled. FDA expects to fund 20 to 25 new awards of $100,000/year for three years. See the Sept. 28, 1993 Federal Register for details.

Program: Faculty Scholar Awards
Agency: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association
Next Deadline: Jan. 14, 1994
Supports basic, clinical, or social science research related to Alzheimer's or related diseases. Awards are made to investigators at the junior faculty level who have at least two years of postdoctoral research training and range up to $45,000 per year for three years of support. Applications are available from the Association in November.

Science/Engineering

Program: Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Office of Naval Technology)
Agency: American Society for Engineering Education
Next Deadline: Jan. 1, 1994
Approximately 40 awards are made to U.S. scientists who have received their doctoral degrees within the past seven years to conduct research at participating Navy centers and laboratories. Applicants should contact the proposed research facility to develop a project addressing a problem of mutual interest to the investigator and the host facility. Appointments are made for one to three years. Stipends range from $36,000 to $42,000, depending on experience. Participating research facilities are listed in program brochure.

Program: Enhancing Reproductive Efficiency
Agency: U.S. Department of Agriculture
Next Deadline: Dec. 13, 1993
Supports innovative research to develop fundamental knowledge on the reproductive processes in animals primarily raised for food and fiber production. Research areas include mechanisms affecting embryo survival, embryomaternal interactions and embryo implantation; gamete physiology including maturation processes, follicle growth, fertilization, and gamete transport; and parturition, postpartum interval to conception, and neonatal survival. Multidisciplinary projects are encouraged.

Program: Photosynthesis and Respiration
Agency: U.S. Department of Agriculture
Next Deadline: Dec. 20, 1993
Supports research on the mechanisms of energy capture, transduction and utilization in crop and forest plants. Experimental approaches are expected to be drawn from disciplines such as biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, microbiology, genetics, physiology, and cellular, developmental and molecular biology. Multidisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Program may fund conferences, if applicable, and invites new investigators to apply with proper designation on proposal.

Program: Plant Responses to the Environment
Agency: U.S. Department of Agriculture
Next Deadline: Dec. 13, 1993
Supports studies of fundamental plant responses to environmental factors such as water, temperature, light (including UV-B), nutrient, and chemical composition (including carbon dioxide, ozone, and sulfur dioxide). Mechanisms may be studied at the ecophysiological, whole plant, cellular, or molecular levels. Research areas include: expression and regulation of genes and gene products; identification of biochemical, cellular, morphological, and phenological changes in plants; and the interaction of multiple factors.
