

A Nov. 1, 1993, application deadline has been cited for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Long and Medium-Term Research at Foreign Centers of Excellence Program. Please note that NSF has changed the deadline to Oct. 15, 1993, and the name of the program to the Postdoctoral and Junior Investigator Research Fellowship Program.
A Nov. 15 deadline has been cited for the Grant Program in Public Relations, sponsored by the Institute for Public Relations Research and Education. In early September, the Institute released a memorandum stating that the program has been discontinued due to a lack of monies.

Supports one year residential fellowships for doctoral candidates and recent doctoral recipients in the humanities or social sciences, who are rewriting their dissertations for publication. Areas of research should complement the Center's interest in a multidisciplinary approach to the history of art. Stipends are $15,000 for predoctoral and $20,000 for postdoctoral fellowships.

With funding from the MacArthur Foundation, approximately 12 to 16 two-year doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in international peace and security studies. Doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars from the physical and biological sciences as well as from the social/behavioral sciences are eligible. Awards are approximately $17,000 per year for dissertation fellowships and not less than $26,000 per year for postdoctoral fellowships.

Awards grants to institutions of higher education or a combination of IHEs and/or public or nonprofit organizations to encourage the development of exemplary uses of technological equipment in libraries. The Department expects to award $3.8 million in grants in FY 94, divided among four categories: networking awards; combination grants; services to institutions; and research and demonstration awards. Program: Training Personnel (IDEA): Grants to SEAs and IHEs

Provides funds to state education agencies to establish and maintain programs to meet state needs for preservice and inservice training of teachers of infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities, and their supervisors. If an SEA decides not to apply for a grant, any IHE within that state may apply for the award. In FY 94, the program expects to award 57 grants averaging $150,000. Supports projects that give minority high school students experience in various aspects of health-related research in order to stimulate students' interest in careers in science. Also supports projects that enable minority school teachers, teachers who work with minority students, or potential teachers, to participate in a summer research project. Eligible institutions must have received either a Biomedical Research Support Grant or Minority Biomedical Research Support Grant in the most recent award year. No indirect costs will be paid.

Emphasizes the integration of molecular, subcellular, and cellular biology in understanding organisms in the lab and in nature. Supports development of materials and programs for science, mathematics and technology learning outside the formal education system. Focal areas are such media as television, radio and print, science and natural history museums, science-technology centers, zoos, parks, aquaria, botanical gardens and arboreta, nature centers, and other youth-service organizations. Preliminary proposals are required and should be submitted two months before the final proposal target dates of February 1 and August 1. Collaborations linking organizations with shared goals are encouraged.
Program: Plant Genetic Mechanisms and Plant Molecular Biology

Supports innovative approaches for developing genetically superior varieties of agricultural crops. Research areas include: identification and characterization of genes and gene products; gene structure and function; regulatory mechanisms of gene expression; nuclear and organellar genes; gene recombination and transportation; chromosonal replication; cell and tissue culture studies; development of molecular and cellular methods of identifying or altering plant characteristics; and utilization of germplasm resources.
