Observatory open to public this fall

In his poem On Hearing the Learned Astronomer, Walt Whitman described sitting through a highly technical astronomy lecture, and then—his head spinning with numbers and theories—he walked outside and "looked up in perfect silence at the stars."

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is inviting the public to come out to the E.I. Howell Observatory on the South Farm on seven dates in October, November, and early December to share the spiritual side of Whitman's experience.

A member of the department's faculty will be available at the following times—provided the sky is at least 75 percent clear at starting time—to answer questions in layman's terms and point out heavenly features:

Friday, Oct. 8......5 a.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 12....7:30-9 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 21...7-8:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 10..5 a.m.
Thursday, Nov. 18...5-7 p.m.
Monday, Nov. 22.....5-7 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 7.....5-7 p.m.
Additional information can be obtained by calling the Department of Physics and Astronomy at 325-2806.

Maps showing the location of the observatory are available in the departmental office in 120 Hilbun Hall. A copy of the map is on reserve in Mitchell Memorial Library and one is posted on the second floor of Hilbun Hall.
