The ban on alcohol at Scott Field will be strictly enforced and those apprehended attempting to smuggle booze into the game will be ejected on the spot, Mississippi State officials said. Lack of cooperation could lead to arrest.
University Police and other security personnel will be on the lookout for alcoholic beverages and prohibited items such as artificial noisemakers and umbrellas at all entrances to the stadium, said Athletic Director Larry Templeton.
Anyone found entering the stadium with alcohol will be escorted out and barrred from re-entering, he said.
"Emotions can run high at a game like this, and the presence of alcohol increases the likelihood of inappropriate behavior," Templeton said. "We're determined to do everything we can to ensure the safety and comfort of fans at the Mississippi State-Ole Miss game.
"We will have security at the gates, in the stands, and around the field, and we simply don't plan to tolerate any kind of behavior that poses a threat to anyone's safety or incites others to behave inappropriately."
Fans will not be allowed on the field after the game, Templeton said, citing a Southeastern Conference rule and the potential for personal injury.
Also for safety, as well as to avoid visual obstructions, Mississippi State has banned umbrellas from its stadium this year. Smoking in the stands also is prohibited.
Already during this football season, student leaders and university officials on both campuses have urged their fans to show good sportsmanship and to welcome opposing team supporters.
"College football brings a great deal of enjoyment to millions of people across the country, and on-campus games between great rivals like Mississippi State and Ole Miss are wonderful events for our students, our communities, our alumni, and other fans," said Roy Ruby, vice president for student affairs.
"It's hard to beat the fun and fellowship for people of all ages that go along with college football," Ruby said. "We are going to make sure it stays that way."
