Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Summer Programs for Language Instructors

Twenty awards to American secondary and postsecondary teachers of Russian or languages of other states of the former Soviet region support participation in an eight-week instruction session at a Russian institution or other appropriate site. Program runs from mid-June to mid-August each summer. The 1994 program may be limited to the study of Russian and Ukrainian due to limited funding. Application guidelines should be available in early September 1993.

Program: Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships

Teaching-research fellowships with stipends of $28,000 are awarded to humanists with recent Ph.D. degrees. Areas of specialization are subject to change each year. Eligible research areas in 1994 are: government; history of art; Russian literature; philosophy; linguistics; and Near Eastern studies. Applications are especially encouraged in fields that are interdisciplinary.

Grants support artists and organizations in the visual media: painting, sculpture, crafts, photography, printmaking, drawing, artists books, performance, video, and new genres. Deadlines are: Public Projects, 10/15/93; Visual Artists Organizations, 6/12/93; Special Projects, 4/1/94; New Genres, 1/15/95; Painting, 2/1/95; Works on Paper, 3/15/95; Photography, 1/25/94; Sculpture, 2/15/94; and Crafts, 3/15/94.

Program: Smithsonian Fellowships

Graduate-level, predoctoral, postdoctoral and senior residential fellowships support research in the following areas: anthropology; archaeology; astrophysics and astronomy; earth sciences; ecology, behavioral, and environmental sciences; evolutionary and systematic biology; history of science and technology; art history; and social and cultural history of the United States. The stipend and length of fellowship vary. Graduate and undergraduate-level minority and Native American internships are also available.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Robert L. Gale Fund for the Study of Trusteeship
Agency: Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, 202/296-8400
Next Deadline: Jan. 31, 1994

Supports research projects that help to improve understanding of governing boards and trustee performance and presidential roles in higher education. Priority is given to qualitative or quantitative data-driven projects. Interdisciplinary studies are encouraged. Eligible applicants are practitioners, established and new scholars, and doctoral candidates. Grants range from $5,000 to $15,000.

Program: FIPSE Drug Program: Institution-Wide Projects

Supports projects to develop, implement, operate and improve drug abuse education and prevention at the postsecondary level. Projects should be comprehensive, institution-wide in scope and should focus on preventing or eliminating student drug and alcohol abuse. Direct or indirect training activities for students, faculty and staff are allowable. IHEs or consortia of IHEs are eligible. For FY 94, approximately 100 awards averaging $100,000 are expected to be made. See the September 24, 1993 Federal Register for details.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Fellowship Awards
Agency: Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association Foundation, 202/835-3470

Provides fellowships in pharmacology/toxicology and pharmaceutics for: advanced predoctoral research (pharmaceutics, October 1 deadline; pharmacology, September 15 deadline); medical student research (January 15 deadline); postdoctoral research (pharmacology-morphology, January 15 deadline; pharmaceutics, October 1 deadline); and undergraduate research (pharmaceutics, October 1 deadline). Program: Basic Research Grants in Reproductive Physiology

Grants are made to institutions to support a nominated faculty member's basic research on mammalian reproductive physiology and biochemistry bearing on sterilization and/or prevention or termination of pregnancy. Preference is given to nominees that have received an M.D. or Ph.D. within the past five years. Maximum award is $20,000.

Science/Engineering

Program: Environmental Science and Engineering Fellowship Program

Fellows spend 10 weeks (June-August) working as consultants to EPA's Office of Research and Development in Washington, DC. Principal areas of research are ecological risk assessment, human health risk assessment, and risk reduction. The stipend is $950 per week plus travel expenses.

Program: Environmental Restoration/Waste Management Young Faculty Award
Agency: U.S. Department of Energy, 615/576-1716

Provides $50,000 annual awards to non-tenured engineering and science faculty in basic and applied environmental restoration or waste management research. Applicants are required to collaborate with DOE facilities and to develop projects related to agency needs.

Program: Small Business Innovation Research Program
Agency: Environmental Protection Agency, 202/260-7445
Next Deadline: Jan. 19, 1994

Supports research by small businesses with capabilities in: drinking water treatment; municipal and industrial wastewater treatment; biological sludge treatment; solid and hazardous waste disposal; pollution problems at Superfund sites; control of rain precursors; process instrumentation; air pollution control; and waste water reduction and pollution prevention. In FY 94, an estimated $5 million will be available for both Phase I and Phase II projects. Colleges and universities are limited to providing consulting or subcontracting services to eligible businesses.
