Faculty Council suggests members for provost search committee

Sandhu also noted that a student escort service will be in place in the near future, and that site selection for the Joe Frank Sanderson Center [student recreation building] is progressing.

Council Chair Leroy Boyd stated that he has sent to President Donald Zacharias a list of faculty members who have been nominated or have volunteered to serve on the search committee for provost and vice president for academic affairs. Boyd based the list upon advice from the council's Executive Committee and upon consideration for weighted representation of the university units.

Zacharias will make the final selection of committee members. Boyd said that he expects to hear from the president within a week.

The council voted to send letters to various committees for study, including a request from Dr. Joe Ray Underwood and Dr. David Morse for clarification of employment status and job duty expectations of nine-month faculty members who choose to teach during summer term.

Dr. Dawn Luthe suggested that AOP 13.14 be modified so that an alternate representative from each college is selected to attend meetings of the Academic Review Board if the regular representative cannot attend. Luthe, a member of the review board, stated that the request was prompted by low attendance at board meetings and subsequent failure to achieve a quorum. The Academic Review Board hears grade appeals of students.

Dr. John Van Cleve forwarded to the council a resolution by the university chapter of the American Association of University Professors regarding a recent incident in which a questionnaire in support of a doctoral dissertation was circulated on campus without the consent of the Institutional Review Board. The AAUP resolution includes a request that the Faculty Council investigate the incident "to determine whether enforcement procedures in support of the IRB are sufficiently strong."
