

Awards are available for established scholars in any field of American history apropriate to Newberry's collections. Newberry collections are especially strong on the discovery of the New World; the American Indian; the American West; local history; genealogy; family history; and colonial Latin America. Maximum stipend for these six to eleven month awards is $40,000.

One six-month fellowship provides a stipend of $12,500 for a woman scholar's research at the Newberry Library. Special consideration will be given to projects particularly concerned with the study of women, but applications will be accepted in any field appropriate to the Newberry's collections, which include history, humanities, music, linguistics, literature, printing, and cartography. Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents with Ph.D.s.

FY 94 priorities are: Early Warning and Preventive Diplomacy; Peace and Security in East and Southeast Asia; and Public Library Reading and Discussion Programs. Up to thirty fellowships of $35,000 are awarded annually for one year of research in matters relevant to the improvement of education in all forms. The program is designed to encourage scholarship among individuals in the early stages of their careers. Candidates must have received the Ph.D. within the past five years.
Program: Minority Science Improvement Program: Special Projects

Supports activities designed to increase the capacity of institutions to enhance the quality of science and engineering programs that will increase the flow of minorities into these fields. Special Projects grants are awarded to organizations that assist institutions and include activities such as faculty development (workshops and training to develop specific scientific skills); research in science education; curriculum development; and the promotion of student interest in science and engineering. Program: Technology, Educational Media, and Materials Program

Supports projects and centers to advance the availability, quality, use, and effectiveness of technology and media in the education of children and youth with disabilities and early intervention activities for infants and toddlers with disabilities. In FY 94, seven grants will support research projects relating to promotion of literacy (11/19/93 deadline), and five grants will support organizational support and professional development. See the August 13 and September 14, 1993 Federal Registers, respectively.
Supports research training focusing on applications of engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology to those areas of biomedical research related to biotechnology. Predoctoral Institutional Training Grants provide stipend of $8,800 per year/$1,500 direct costs; Postdoctoral Fellowships provide annual stipend ranging from $18,600-$32,300; and Senior Fellowships support more experienced investigators at annual stipend of $30,000 per year/$3,000 for supplies.
Approximately 150-200 ten-week summer fellowships are available for science and engineering faculty to work in residence at one of the research and development centers operated by the Office of Naval Research. A stipend and travel allowance ranging from $1,100-$1,600 per week are provided. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with two years of teaching or research experience. Research areas include behavioral, biomedical and life sciences, space sciences, psychology and medical sciences, and engineering an physical sciences.

Provides opportunities for science and engineering faculty at colleges and universities to spend ten weeks working with the research staff of a NASA research and development center. A stipend of $900/week plus travel allowance will be provided to approximately 150 fellows each year. U.S. citizens with two years of teaching or research experience are eligible to apply.

Administered by NRC on behalf of the Ford Foundation, postdoctoral fellowships support research in the fields of biological, physical, mathematical, engineering, social, and behavioral sciences, the humanities, and interdisciplinary projects combining any of these areas. Approximately 25 nine- to 12-month fellowships are available to members of the following minority groups: American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Black Americans, Mexican-Americans/Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, and Native Pacific Islanders.

Approximately 150 awards are made to faculty members with at least two years teaching and/or research experience for 8-12 week summer appointments to Air Force laboratories. Preference is given to candidates with no prior Air Force research sponsorship. AFOSR research interests include the physical sciences, engineering, life sciences, and psychology. Fellows may continue their research by submitting a proposal to the AFOSR Mini-Grant Program. Program expects to announce FY 94 competition in November 1993.

Awards of $20,000 support short-term research projects that do not exceed six months duration in the following areas; biosciences, engineering, geosciences, materials, and mathematics. Proposals must not exceed twenty pages (including budget). Proposed projects must be "stand alone" and not be predicated on the use of any facilities other than those under the direct control of the proposer.
