Dr. John Sallis, a distinguished professor of philosophy at Vanderbilt University, is a pioneer in bringing phenomenology and contemporary continental philosophy to American college campuses. He is the founding editor of the journal, Research in Phenomenology, and general editor of the book series, Studies in Continental Thought, at Indiana University Press.
Sallis holds the endowed W. Alton Jones Chair in Philosophy at Vanderbilt.
The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and Religion, the University Honors Program, and the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the Division of Humanities at Mississippi University for Women.
While on campus, Sallis will visit philosophy classes and deliver a free, public address entitled "STONE" in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. The 7 p.m. lecture will include a slide presentation of stone as it appears in nature and in art.
Sallis' visit will mark the third consecutive year the Department of Philosophy and Religion has received an NEH grant to bring a distinguished speaker to campus.
