The Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning approved the reorganization of the departments of Agronomy, Entomology, Horticulture, and Plant Pathology and Weed Science in November.
The newly consolidated units will be the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.
Dr. Verner Hurt, director of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, said the move will streamline administrative costs and direct more scarce resources into programs.
Dr. Hiram Palmertree, director of the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service, said, "The restructuring will be conducive to issue-based programming and program planning by initiative."
"These new departments will allow the university to provide excellent programs by enhancing current curricula and courses," said Dr. William Fox, dean of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.
The new Department of Plant and Soil Sciences will include 34 faculty members. Dr. Richard Mullenax heads the department.
The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology will include 26 faculty members. The department head is Dr. Clarence Collison.
Faculty members in both departments have research and extension responsibilities in addition to classroom teaching.
