Funding Opportunities

Listed below are funding opportunities received from various sources such as the Office of Federal Programs. Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), 325-7404, will assist you in obtaining information and applications necessary for submission to governmental or private sources.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION Please contact your Sponsored Programs Research Administrator immediately if you are writing a proposal with a deadline of December 22, 1993, through January 3, 1994. In order to review and process proposals before the winter holiday, we request all proposals be delivered to our office by December 17.

Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Grants for Collaborative Activities

Supports U.S. scholars engaging in collaborative work in the humanities or social sciences with colleagues from Central and Eastern Europe, the Newly Independent States, and Mongolia. Supported activities include joint publications and comparative surveys. Individuals may travel abroad or invite their colleagues to the U.S. An applicant must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional degree and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Agency: National Historical Publications and Records Commission, 202/501-5610
Next Deadline: Feb. 1, 1994

Grants will support cooperative projects with state and local groups to promote archival management and preservation, assist new documentary projects, and increase the educational use of historical documents. For June 1 deadline, projects will strengthen the efforts of state historical records coordinators to develop strategic plans for preservation and publication and, through matching grants, develop large-scale centers projects.

Program: Preservation Services Fund Program

Funds are awarded in three categories: consultant services for professional advice on specific preservation projects; preservation education for program development at the elementary through postgraduate levels; and co-sponsored conferences that address subjects important to historic preservation. Applicants should contact their regional office for information and applications. Grants in average between $1,000 and $1,500; must be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Grants Program
Agency: BellSouth Foundation, 404/249-2396
Next Deadline: Feb. 1, 1994

Supports the initiation of education reform programs in the following topics: new approaches to teacher education; creative teaching; leadership development; comprehensive services; public policy initiatives to improve education; and expansion of the role of information technology in education curriculum and practices. Grants are restricted to institutions in AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, and TN.

Program: Postsecondary Education for Persons with Disabilities:
Demonstrations
Agency: U.S. Department of Education, 202/205-9503
Next Deadline: Feb. 4, 1994

Supports model programs of postsecondary, vocational, technical, continuing, or adult education for individuals with disabilities. In FY 94, seven grants ranging from $90,000-$110,000 will be awarded. See 9/14/93 Federal Register.

Program: Cooperative Education Programs -Administration; Demonstration; Research; and Training and Resource Center Projects

Grants go to IHEs to establish or strengthen cooperative education programs that allow students to earn money for their education through alternating periods of study and paid employment. For FY 94, grants will go for new projects (Administration, Part A), ongoing projects (Administration, Part B), and for demonstration, research, and personnel training/resource center projects, all aimed at improving cooperative education. Health/Mental Health

Program: Fellowships in Cancer Research

Support for research into the causes, origins, and treatment of cancer through postdoctoral fellowships for investigators with no more than one year of postdoctoral experience. Fellowships have an initial appointment of one, two or three years, with a base stipend of $24,000 for the first year, plus a research and travel allowance.

Program: Nutrition and Health Research Grants
Agency: National Dairy Council, 708/803-2000
Next Deadline: Feb. 1, 1994 (letter of intent)

Grants support research that promotes increased human consumption of milk or dairy products. Current research interests include: beneficial attributes of milk-fat; role of dairy foods in health and well-being; non-traditional uses of dairy products; and interaction between genetics and diet in influencing chronic disease. 8 to 15 new grants are funded per year.

Program: Research for Mothers and Children
Agency: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 301/496-5097

Funds biomedical, social and behavioral sciences research to improve the health and well-being of mothers and children. Areas are: developmental biology, genetics and teratology; endocrinology, nutrition and growth; pregnancy and perinatology; human learning and behavior (including cognition, learning and memory, speech and language development, and personality and social development); mental retardation and developmental disabilities; and pediatric, adolescent and maternal AIDS.

Program: Small Grant (RO3) Awards

1- to 3-year awards support pilot projects for both new and experienced investigators to test new techniques or conduct feasibility studies in innovative and/or high risk research areas. The above deadlines refer to these institutes: FIC, NCI, NEI, NIAAA, NIDA, NIDDK, and NIMH.

Science/Engineering

Program: Graduate Student Researchers Program
Agency: National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 202/358-1531
Next Deadline: Feb. 1, 1994

Provides opportunities for graduate students to conduct research in space science and technology disciplines at either NASA Centers or at the student's home institution. In addition to a stipend, the studdent and university receive an allowance to cover research-related expenses.

Program: Water Quality
Agency: U.S. Department of Agriculture, 202/401-6060
Next Deadline: Feb. 7, 1994

Research areas include: soils and microorganisms (basic biochemical, genetic, and molecular mechanisms of microbial uptake); plant/water contamination interaction (basic biochemical, genetic, and molecular mechanisms of whole plant uptake, the cellular, morphological adaptation of plants, and basic studies on species that accumulate contaminants); and wetland and riparian systems (processes related to reduction of agricultural or forest contaminates).
