School violence to get spotlight at January conference

Public school administrators from throughout the state are invited to take part next month in a conference focusing on what has become a major challenge for American education.

"Coping with School Violence" will be the topic Jan. 18-20 when the Mississippi Academy of School Executives meets at the Lake Tiak O'Khata Conference Center near Louisville.

"Among our topics will be student perspectives on violence, strategies for coping with violent behavior, child abuse investigations, and the development of school action plans," said Dr. Ned B. Lovell, head of the Educational Leadership Department at Mississippi State University.

Lowell also is executive secretary of the academy, which was established several years ago by former Mississippi State education professor Lamar Moody and local school superintendents to provide a forum for sharing information and ideas.

Conference speakers will include school superintendent Orman Bridges of Amory; faculty members Jack Blendinger, Frank Elrod, Gary Johnson, and Melvin Ray of Mississippi State; Bob Nations and Chester Quarles of the University of Mississippi; and Johnny Purvis of the University of Southern Mississippi.

Additional information and a complete conference schedule can be obtained by telephoning Lovell at (662) 325-3041.
