Collins, Mabry add sports medicine to medical qualifications

Dr. Robert Collins, director of the Longest Student Health Center, and Dr. Michael Mabry, health center physician, recently were awarded a new medical designation.

The two received a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine after successfully completing the American Board of Family Practice Sports Medicine Examination.

Collins said the designation is the equivalent of a sub-specialty in sports medicine. To be eligible for the four-hour exam, physicians must be board-certified in family practice and devote 25 percent of their practice to sports medicine.

The ABFP held the first nationwide exam last fall and nearly 600 physicians participated. Collins said the failure rate was 35 percent.
