Dawgs on a roll...
Going into Wednesday night's game against the nation's No. 3 ranked team, the Mississippi State Bulldogs were off to their best basketball start in 33 years. The Bulldogs roared out of the gate for the 1993-94 season posting 11 wins in their first 13 starts, including last night's thrilling 72-71 win over the University of Arkansas Razorbacks at sold-out Humphrey Coliseum. The win moved Mississippi State to 5-0 in Southeastern Conference play and gave them a two-game lead in the SEC Western Division. Richard Williams' cagers next host the No. 7 Kentucky Wildcats Saturday in The Hump. The Bulldogs' only losses came at the hands of 20th ranked University of Alabama at Birmingham and Big East member Villanova. Among the leaders of this year's Bulldog team is freshman center Erick Dampier from Lawrence County High School. He was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for his performances in last week's Bulldog wins over Auburn and Georgia. Dampier became only the third Bulldog to receive the SEC's Player of the Week honor, joining former All SEC performers Greg Carter (twice in 1990-91) and Tony Watts (1991-92). He also was only the fourth freshman ever in the conference to receive the honor. Dampier began his campaign for this week's SEC Player of the Week honors with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocked shots against Arkansas.
