Visiting professor to lecture on liberation theology

Dr. Paul W. Hollenbach, Criss Visiting Professor in Christianity in the Department of Philosophy and Religion, will deliver a series of public lectures on liberation theology throughout February and March.

The theme of the discussions is The Liberation of Jesus for Social Justice: Liberation Theology in Today's World.

The lectures will take place at Trinity Presbyterian Church, located at 607 Hospital Road in Starkville. All are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the following dates:

The lecture series is sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and Religion and the Criss Foundation.

Hollenbach, a professor of religious studies at Iowa State University, has done extensive research on liberation theology and the history and philosophy of religions.

He is the author of numerous articles and papers and a book, Jesus the Healer, published by Cambridge University Press. His professional associations include membership in the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. In 1982-83, he served as president of the Upper Midwest Region of the latter group.

From 1974-86, Hollenbach chaired the Religious Studies Program at Iowa State. He holds a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College (Illinois), a master's from the University of Rochester (New York), and a doctorate from Drew University (New Jersey).
