Employee nominations and testimonials played a large part in the selection process. Amos received three separate nominations from six of his employees, three of whom have served under him throughout his tenure as department head.
Amos joined the faculty at Mississippi State in 1968, was named assistant dean of the College of Education in 1970, and became head of Curriculum and Instruction in 1972.
According to associate department head Dr. Gloria Correro in her letter of nomination, "He genuinely cares for all those who work with him. He has strong interpersonal skills, spending great amounts of his personal time to ensure success of faculty members. His leadership style invites everyone to be active participants."
Amos received a bachelor's degree at Central Missouri State University, and a master's and Ed.D. from Vanderbilt University.
