USA Today will choose 60 students for its 1995 All-USA Academic Team. The team will be featured in a two-page color spread in the Feb. 3, 1995, edition.
The campus deadline for nominations is Nov. 15.
The 20 members of the first team will receive $2,500 cash prizes and will attend a special awards luncheon.
Dr. Jack White, director of the University Honors Program at Mississippi State, said that the selection criteria are designed to find students who excel not only in scholarship, but in leadership roles on and off campus.
A key element in selection to the team will be "a student's outstanding original academic or intellectual product," according to a letter from USA Today Editor Peter S. Prichard. "The judges will be influenced by the student's ability to describe that outstanding endeavor in his/her own words."
Students must be nominated by a professor, and three additional recommendations from other persons may accompany the nomination.
Nominees will complete a nomination form and describe in 250 words or less their "most outstanding intellectual endeavor."
Winners will be selected by a panel of educators. Factors influencing their decisions include scholarship, creativity, leadership, and ability to use and comprehend the English language.
