BANNER is a pre-programmed, state-of-the-art software package that is expected to meet the future operational needs of the university.
Bland and Reed said that every attempt has been made to adjust the software operation to "mirror" the day to day operations of the university, but that initially we can expect problems to arise which must be dealt with on an individual basis. Start-up problems could include risk of error, less flexibility, and temporary lack of on-line account balances.
Long-term benefits will be realized through training of departmental personnel in the use of online BANNER processing. Training will be provided, and departments will be notified of times and locations of the training sessions after basic system operations have been established.
As an integral part of the new system, the university's account number structure has changed. A list of new account numbers has been provided to vice presidents, deans, and department heads. Departments are asked to begin using the new account numbers immediately on all forms. If an account is missing, call 325-1749 for a correct assignment.
During the current phase of implementation, Bland said, both new transactions and historical data since July 1, 1993, are being loaded into the BANNER system. Due to the process, however, departments will not be able to gain immediate on-line access.
Departments will receive normal monthly ledger reports for the month ending Jan. 31, 1994. Efforts are under way to combine the data from the old system with current data so that departments can receive consolidated reports for the period ending Feb. 28, 1994.
A major advantage of the new system is that it will allow departments to discontinue much of the paper processing being done now. Also, account statuses will be updated immediately upon entry by a department, eliminating the long delays that sometimes occur with a paper processing system.
"We are extremely encouraged for the future with our new financial system," Bland said. "Major efforts have been expended and will continue over the next several months. We ask for your patience, cooperation, and understanding during this time. We assure you that your input during this period will be valued and well received."
