Former Mississippi State president McComas leaves legacy of commitment to students

Mississippi State's 14th president, Dr. James D. McComas, died Feb. 10, five months after stepping down as president of Virginia Tech to begin chemotherapy treatments for colon cancer. He was 65.

McComas came to Mississippi State in 1976 from the University of Tennessee, where he was dean of the College of Education.

His nine-year tenure at Mississippi State was noted for growth in facilities, increases in research funding, and an emphasis on academic quality.

In 1985, he accepted the position of president at the University of Toledo (Ohio), and in 1988 was named president at Virginia Tech. He retired there Dec. 31, 1993.

McComas is credited with spearheading the funding drive for the Creative Arts Complex at Mississippi State, later named McComas Hall in his honor. He also led the $32 million campaign to fund construction of the College of Veterinary Medicine facilities and a $4 million drive for the addition to the School of Architecture.

He is remembered for his deep concern for students and his contributions to undergraduate teaching and advising. In October, he received the highest accolade of the National Academic Advising Association, the Pacesetter Award, for his strong commitment to academic advising, advisers, and students. More than 10 university presidents nationwide were nominated for the award.

"Higher education in the United States has lost an outstanding leader and someone who cares deeply about people," said President Donald Zacharias. "Dr. McComas displayed brilliant leadership during his nine years as president of Mississippi State. McComas Hall is a lasting monument to his vision for Mississippi State and a commitment to the people of Mississippi. Through interactions on numerous higher education committees, Jim and Adele became close friends with Tommie and me. The entire Mississippi State University family sends its expressions of deepest sympathy to Adele and all the members of the McComas family."

McComas is survived by his wife, Adele, and children Cathleen and Patrick.

Services were held Sunday in Worthington, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the James D. McComas Scholarship Fund, Virginia Tech, 315 Burruss Hall, Blacksburg, VA 24061.
