

Provides supplemental support to individuals conducting research in economic history. Preference is given to recent recipients of the Ph.D. to assist them with publication of their dissertation or monographs; however, all levels of scholars may apply. Maximum award is $1,200.
Conservation Project Support Program

Awards averaging $13,000 support conservation of collections at all types and sizes of museums. Separate funding priorities are identified for each of the four categories of collections (non-living; systematic/natural history; living/animals; and living/plants) and include: survey of collections and environmental conditions; provision of optimum environmental conditions; training in conservation; research in conservation; and conservation treatment of collections. Not all priorities apply to each category of support.
Supports student community service projects or teacher training in service-learning concepts and skills sponsored by higher education institutions or public agencies working in partnership with those institutions. Institutions may apply directly to the Corporation. For FY 94, the Corporation plans to award $10 million to colleges and universities to develop high quality programs that make service an integral part of students' higher education experience.

Supports the establishment or maintenance of university centers that provide economic development services and other technical assistance to public bodies, non-profit organizations and private firms located in areas of economic distress to plan and implement activities that generate jobs and income and alleviate problems of distressed populations in the area. DOC has tentatively scheduled a competition for FY 94 with a tentative application deadline of March 31, 1994.
Program: FIE: Innovation in Education Program

Originally designed to be the K-12 counterpart to the FIPSE Comprehensive Program, the program was created to support innovative, cutting-edge projects for improving K-12 education. The program is expected to change in FY 94, with the Department limiting the competition to inservice teacher training projects. These plans are very tentative, however. A notice of proposed rulemaking, with a closing date notice, could be released as early as mid-February 1994.
Program: Vocational Rehabilitation Services for American Indians with Disabilities

Provides grants to tribes and tribal consortia for vocational rehabilitation services to Native Americans with disabilities residing on federal or state reservations. Institutions may not apply directly but may subcontract with tribes. See the 9/24/93 Federal Register for details.
Provides funds for construction and renovation of facilities, including purchase of major research equipment, for biomedical and behavioral research and research training. Applications to promote interdisciplinary research, research on emerging technologies, or other novel research programs are particularly encouraged. Requests of less than $500,000 will not be accepted. Matching funds are required. See the 1/7/94 NIH Guide for more details.

Individual awards support one to three years postdoctoral research training in specified areas of biomedical and behavioral research. Individuals must propose specific projects at non-profit or public institutions (including federal laboratories). Consult contact for referral to appropriate NIH institute.
Program: National Research Service Awards-Predoctoral Fellowships

NIAAA, NIDA, and NIMH provide NRSAs to individuals for research training in specified areas of behavioral and biomedical research. Applicants must have completed two or more years of graduate work and be enrolled in Ph.D. or D.Sc. program. Student stipend is $8,800/year plus up to $3,000/year for institutional allowance. Institutes have different program initiatives, so applicants should contact appropriate institute directly: NIAAA: 301/468-2600; NIDA: 301/443-6710; and NIMH: 301/443-4414. Approximately 40 awards are made to U.S. scientists who have received their doctoral degrees within the past seven years to conduct research at participating Navy centers and laboratories. Applicants should contact the proposed research facility to develop a project addressing a problem of mutual interest to the investigator and the host facility. Appointments are made for one to three years. Stipends range from $36,000 to $42,000, depending on experience. Participating research facilities are listed in program brochure.

Supports efforts to enrich and enhance the teaching experience of teachers of science, math and technology. Funds are provided for such activities as seminars, conferences, and research participation opportunities for teachers who can take a leadership role in peer teaching and for teachers in need of continuing education. New Leadership Institutes will build coalitions of educators and educate a cadre of "master" teachers to educate peers.
Program: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Awards for U.S. Researchers

Allows approximately 25 young U.S. researchers to collaborate with Japanese colleagues at non-academic research facilities in Japan. Nominations are made by NSF to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, which then administers the awards. The one-year research awards provide a monthly stipend while in Japan and pay for travel, housing, medical insurance, and research-related expenses. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, not more than 35 years of age and hold a Ph.D. in science or engineering.
