A simulation of the United Nations Security Council, the hands-on learning program is designed to enrich the students' understanding of world politics.
In addition to assuming major leadership roles in mock council sessions, the representatives of 19 state high schools and three universities, along with their teachers, will have the opportunity to meet and work with career diplomats.
This year, the diplomatic representatives will be Dr. Macie J. Kozlowski, minister counselor at the Polish Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Yang-Chun Park, head of the South Korean Consulate in Houston, Texas. Two of the programs are open to the general public. At 1:30 p.m. on the 10th, Park will be featured speaker for the opening general session in the Colvard Union ballroom. At 11 a.m. the following day, both diplomats will answer questions at a press conference, also in the Union ballroom.
The U.N. charter, signed in 1945 by the United States and 49 other nations, gives the Security Council "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security." Though principally concerned with the debate of resolution of conflicts, it is the only U.N. body with the power to create and deploy peacekeeping forces.
The model council is sponsored by the Political Science Department and the College of Arts and Sciences, with assistance from the Center for International Security and Strategic Studies, John C. Stennis Institute of Government, and University Honors Program.
Sending delegates are Byhalia High School, Calhoun City High School, Canton Academy, Clinton High School, Deer Creek School, Humphreys Academy, Jackson Preparatory School, Maben High School, Moor High School, Natchez Cathedral High School, Pearl High School, Puckett Attendance Center, Richland Attendance Center, Starkville Academy, Starkville High School, Vicksburg High School, Warren Central High School, West Point High School, and Yazoo City High School.
Students at Alcorn State University, Mississippi State, and Mississippi University for Women also will participate.
