Funding Opportunities

Listed below are funding opportunities received from various sources such as the Office of Federal Programs. Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), 325-3994, will assist you in obtaining information and applications necessary for submission to governmental or private sources.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is revising the Grants for Research and Education in Science and Engineering (GRESE). The GRESE will be replaced by the Grant Proposal Guide (GPG), NSF 94-2, and will contain a perforated forms section (Proposal Forms Kit) which is also available as NSF 94-3. The new GPG must be used for all proposals submitted on or after Monday, April 4, 1994. We have ordered both the GPG and the NSF 94-3 and are available by calling the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Media Arts Program

Grants support new works by artists and their distribution through exhibition, broadcast, cable, and cassette, and preservation of media arts (documentary, experimental and narrative works, manipulations, animated film and audio art). Categories and deadlines are: Film/Video Production, 10/29/94; Media Arts Centers, 5/7/94; National Services, 5/7/94; and Radio/Audio Art, 12/10/94. Application guidelines will be available in mid-March 1994. There could be some revision in the above categories.

Program: Fellowships for University Teachers
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities, 202/606-8466

Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for six to 12 months of full-time independent study and research to enhance fellows' capacities as teachers and scholars. Program is intended for individuals affiliated with institutions with extensive Ph.D. programs in the humanities. Both new investigators and those with significant research experience are eligible.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Grants Program
Agency: American Honda Foundation, 310/781-4090
Next Deadline: May 1, 1994

Awards are made to non-profit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth, as related to science education, environmental education and job training. Emphasis is on broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects with national scope that are dedicated to improving the human condition. Grants during the past year ranged from $10,000 to $100,000.

Program: School-College-University Partnerships
Agency: U.S. Department of Education, 202/708-4808
Next Deadline: April 1, 1994

Promotes partnerships between local education agencies and colleges or universities for the development of tutorial or other special support programs aimed at improving the academic skills of low-income or at-risk students, thereby improving their chances for postsecondary matriculation or finding gainful employment. For FY 94, the Department plans to make around 14 awards totaling about $4 million. Applications were released on 1/28/94.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Training Grants for Faculty Development in Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse
Agency: Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, 301/443-9351
Next Deadline: May 18, 1994

Grants are awarded to institutions to support clinical training of health professions faculty in the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug problems. Projects include a 3-year training and curriculum development component followed by a 2-year program evaluation. Only schools of medicine, nursing, osteopathy and social work, and departments of psychology can apply. In FY 92 $700,000 was available to support four to six new grants. Continuation awards were funded in FY 93. CSAP expects to announce an FY 94 competition in April 1994.

Program: Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training

Supports mental health research training for honors third and fourth-year undergraduates in four-year colleges, universities and health professional schools with substantial numbers of underrepresented minorities. The goal is to prepare these students to compete successfully for entry into graduate programs. See the 8/27/93 NIH Guide for details. A new announcement should appear in the NIH Guide by summer 1994. This program is equivalent to the Minority Access to Research Careers Program for Honors Undergraduates offered at other NIH institutes.

Science/Engineering

Program: New Faculty Awards
Agency: Dreyfus (Camille and Henry) Foundation, 212/753-1760

About ten grants for new faculty members in chemistry are available to U.S. institutions. Funds will be awarded in time for use by the faculty member when he/she formally begins the first year of teaching. Grants are primarily intended as seed money for new ideas and concepts and not as salary support. Funds may also be used for student research stipends, scientific equipment, or other research needs. Faculty must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry or related chemical engineering. Grant amount is $25,000.

Program: Networking and Communications Research

Supports research in communications and information theory, including coding, multi-user information theory, advanced concepts in signal identification and tracking, and innovative approaches to communications. Also supports research on networks including architectures, management, protocols, fiber optic networks, and internetworking.

Program: Biological Oceanography Program
Agency: National Science Foundation, 703/306-1587
Next Deadline: May 1, 1994

Target Date - proposals may be submitted at any time. Supports research in ocean productivity; distribution, abundance, physiology, and life history of pelagic, coastal, and deep sea marine organisms and their interactions with environments; structures of pelagic and benthic food chains; primary and secondary production; interactions between deep sea biological processes and the ocean ecosystem; specialization of the deep sea organisms; ecology of the Great Lakes and factors regulating productivity; and marine biotechnology. Submit proposals at any time.

Program: Instructional Materials Development
Agency: National Science Foundation, 703/306-1614
Next Deadline: May 15, 1994
Target Date - proposals may be submitted at any time.

Supports the development of strategies and materials for students and teachers to improve science, math and technology instruction at all levels, including K-12, preschool and the transition from secondary school to college. Projects may revise existing materials or create new ones; develop a few modules or comprehensive curricula; and address any number of subjects. Current focus areas are assessing student learning; developing comprehensive math curricula; and increasing technology education. Preliminary proposals are required.
