University women's group to recognize Norman, others

The director of the Mississippi Humanities Council will be among nine persons honored at a March 21 Mississippi State banquet sponsored by the university's oldest women's issues organization.

Dr. Cora G. Norman of Jackson, council director since its inception in the early 1970s, will receive the 1994 Outstanding Mississippi Woman Award, the highest honor given annually by the President's Commission on the Status of Women.

Norman will be featured speaker for the Colvard Union ballroom program.

Also receiving awards at the 90-minute noontime luncheon will be:

Karen L. Bluhm of Starkville, Bettye Douglas Memorial Outstanding Clerical/Secretarial Woman.
Joan M. Easley of Vardaman, Outstanding Undergraduate Woman.
Paula A. Jernigan of Starkville, Outstanding Non-Teaching Professional Woman.
Denise T. Keller of Louisville, Outstanding Graduate Woman.
Dr. Miriam J. Shillingsburg of Starkville, Outstanding Executive, Administrative and Managerial Woman.
Imogene C. Triplett of Starkville, Outstanding Community Woman.
Dr. Diane E. Wall of Starkville, Outstanding Teaching Faculty Woman.

Dr. Linda Pote, commission chair for the 1993-94 school year, also will present a special honor to a university administrator who has made an exceptional effort in support of the commission's primary role--to enhance the status and role of women on campus. The Friend of Women Award winner is kept secret until the banquet announcement.

The food serving line will open at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $6.50 each and can be purchased at six campus locations (listed below).

Norman, who was appointed the Humanities Council's leader in 1972, has been called a "powerhouse for the humanities" by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. The National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C., has cited her for "running a tight ship" in the distribution of federal support funds.

As for the other honorees, Bluhm is executive secretary for the School of Architecture; Easley is a senior petroleum engineering major; Keller is completing work on a master's degree in public policy and administration; and Jernigan is employee relations manager with the Department of Human Resources Management.

Shillingsburg is associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of English; Triplett is chair for environmental issues of the Garden Clubs of Mississippi Inc.; and Wall is a professor of political science and coordinator of the department's undergraduate studies.
