Mississippi State's economic impact tops $500 million, over 12,800 jobs
Mississippi State University's economic impact within the state totaled more than $500 million and accounted for nearly 13,000 jobs in 1992-93, according to a study released by the university's Office of Research.
The total economic impact of $506 million included an estimated $283 million in direct spending by the university, faculty, staff, students, and visitors, according to the study performed by Dr. Charles Campbell, associate professor of economics.
The total of 12,893 jobs attributed to the university's economic activity included more than 5,300 resulting from out-of-state revenues attracted by Mississippi State. Other highlights:
- Visitors to the university spent more than $20 million in the state and local economies.
- Students spent almost $47 million in the state and local economies, in addition to their on-campus spending.
- University activity resulted in state income tax and sales tax collections totaling about $21.6 million in 1992-93.
- Less than 38 percent of the university's 1992-93 total budget of $244 million was in the form of state appropriations or contracts.
- For every $1 invested in the university by the state of Mississippi, the university generated an additional $1.63 from other sources.
"Mississippi State generates major economic activity in the state and is responsible for a significant number of jobs," said Dr. Ralph Powe, vice president for research. "We are convinced that the state is a better place to live because of the university's existence."
