Assists U.S. colleges and universities to strengthen programs in crucial foreign languages, area studies and international fields. The tentative deadline of 6/15 is for a required preliminary proposal. About 10 grants averaging $250,000 will be awarded. Undergraduate awards (administered by Institute for International Education) are also available for study abroad (2/18/94 deadline); graduate fellowships (administered by the Academy for Educational Development) are made to doctoral candidates to study critical foreign languages (3/18/94 deadline).
Supports basic and applied research on the nonprofit sector in the U.S. through research grants (up to $50,000), larger scale research (up to $100,000), and doctoral dissertation research grants (up to $20,000). Principal areas of interest are democracy; role of nonprofits; advocacy; philanthropy; governance; public accountability; financial resources; nonprofit workforce; and international dimensions of nonprofit activities.
Program: NIJ Visiting Fellows Program

Supports criminal justice researchers and practitioners for six to 18 months in residence at the National Institute of Justice. NIJ is particularly interested in research relating to its long-range goals: reducing violent crime, drug-related crime and consequences of crime; crime prevention; improving effectiveness; and developing and evaluating information on emerging crime patterns. Awards are made to institutions to support basic research on hereditary influences (including research on the structure and function of chromosomes, their subunits, genes, and their supporting structures), environmental effects (including drugs, radiation, infections, reproductive hazards, and malnutrition), and the interaction of heredity and the environment in the causation of birth defects. Awards average $35,000 to $50,000. Deadline cited is for submission of required abstract. Full applications are due September 30.

Funds research on all aspects of hearing, equilibrium, speech, voice, language, and the special senses (taste, touch, smelll). Included are clinical an basic studies of anatomical, physiological, biochemical, behavioral, and pathological aspects of communicative and neurosensory disorders. Also supports research, development and evaluation of communicative aids and literacy of individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Provides support to institutions to develop model projects designed to educate elementary and secondary students and/or the general public about science related to drug abuse and addiction. Of special interest are projects that focus on the brain and its relation to addiction, including causes and effects of abusing drugs. One- to three-year awards provide support for pilot projects for both new and experienced investigators to test new techniques or conduct feasibility studies in innovative and/or high risk research areas. The above deadlines refer to the following institutes: FIC, NCI, NEI, NIAAA, NIDA, NIDDK, and NIMH. Other institutes (NIDCD, NIDR, NINR, NHLBI, NCRR) have small grants programs, but different deadlines.

Grants support continuing education and training projects that improve the ability and competence of health professionals who care for those with spinal cord injury and disease; post-professional specialty traineeships to increase the supply of these health professionals, educators and administrators; and patient/client and family education projects to improve the well-being of persons with spinal cord injury or disease. Awards range from $10,000 to $40,000 per year.
Supports two types of activities. Scientific exchanges of one to six months are co-sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the scientific academies of the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries. The deadline is 6/24/94 for travel or hosting under this initiative for 1995.
Program: Small Business Innovation Research Program

Support is provided to science-based and high-tech small businesses to carry out innovative high-risk research on important scientific and technical problems. University scientists are not eligible to apply, but may subcontract with small businesses to provide consulting and other services. FY 94 priorities are biotechnology, instrumentation, high performance computing and communications, advanced manufacturing systems, and advanced materials processing. The FY 94 announcement will appear in April 1994.
