Auditions announced for 'Taming of the Shrew'

Auditions for the summer production of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew will be held May 12, 6-9 p.m., in the McComas Hall theater. One round of auditions was held April 24.

Seventeen roles are available for the Mississippi Shakespeare Theater production scheduled to open July 7. Rehearsals will begin June 6.

"Anyone interested in the play is eligible to audition," said Dr. Jeffrey S. Elwell, director of the Communication Department's theater program. "Several professional actors will work with the production and will join with students and community members to make up the final cast."

Elwell said high school and university students may desire to gain more than acting experience by participating. By enrolling in the summer theater workshop course, they can earn four hours of academic credit.

"Even though the auditions will require 'cold' readings of the scenes, actors also may prepare a short Shakespearean monologue if they wish," Elwell said.

The play is sponsored by the Communication Department, University Lyceum Series, University Honors Program, Starkville Bank Association, Kinko's Copies, and Lynn Phillips Financial Inc.
