Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Literature Program
Agency: National Endowment for the Arts, 202/682-5451
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Grants support published creative writers (including translators) and organizations that foster literature as a professional pursuit. Categories and deadlines are: 5/27/94 (fiction/creative nonfiction); Assistance to Literary Magazines, 7/1/94; Small Press Assistance, 8/5/94; and Distribution Projects, 9/9/94.

Program: Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Development

Next Deadline: June 10, 1994 (tentative)

Grants go to IHEs and other nonprofit organizations to establish prototype programs that reach out to young Americans, and through practical study, train them to assume leadership positions in national and international areas. Eligible activities may include student outreach/recruitment, internship placement, curriculum development, and information dissemination. Applications will be published in mid- to late-April 1994.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Action-Demonstration Project Grants
Agency: AARP Andrus Foundation, 202/434-6190
Next Deadline: July 15, 1994 (preliminary proposals)

Supports action-demonstration projects that translate and apply research results to older adults' needs or those who work on their behalf. Priority topics include: maintaining the independence of older people; health and long-term care; work and volunteer opportunities; and improvement of service delivery. Grants are awarded for up to 3 years at a maximum of $150,000 per year.

Program: Child Abuse and Neglect Research and Demonstration

Next Deadline: May 31, 1994

Supports research, demonstration and service projects on the causes, prevention, identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect. FY 94 priorities are field-initiated research; research fellowships; research on risk assessment systems; expanding the use of volunteers; model inter-agency collaborations to prevent maltreatment of children with disabilities; training regarding maltreatment of these children; and training child fatality review teams. Health/Mental Health

Program: Research Grants Programs
Agency: American Institute for Cancer Research, 202/328-7744
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Two types of awards support research relevant to the effects of dietary and nutritional practices on the onset, development, and treatment of cancer. Investigator-Initiated Research Grants (January 1 and July 1 deadlines) average $55,000 per year for two years; and First Award Grants (February 1 deadline) provide one-year, non-renewable awards of $10,000.

Program: Education Programs in Occupational Safety and Health
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Provides funds to institutions to pay part or all of the cost of training activities in occupational safety and health. Long-term training grants are awarded to support academic programs in industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational/industrial medicine, and occupational safety. Program: Rural Telemedicine Grant Program
Agency: Health Resources and Services Administration, 301/443-0835
Next Deadline: May 20, 1994

Supports telecommunications systems that link multi-specialty entities with rural health care facilities for the delivery of health care services to the rural sites and exchanging information among the sites. This program does not support distance learning programs. Equipment costs of up to 40 percent of the total award are allowable. In FY 94, $4 million is available to award eight grants. Program: Special Projects of National Significance (AIDS Services)

Next Deadline: May 31, 1994

Supports innovative programs to improve knowledge and skills in the delivery of health and support services for persons with HIV disease. FY 94 funding categories are model dissemination and model refinement. $2.5 million is available to award 10 grants. See the March 29, 1994 Federal Register.

Program: Toxicology and Environmental Health Research Grants
Agency: International Life Sciences Institute - Research Foundation, 202/659-0789
Next Deadline: May 27, 1994 (Preproposals)

Supports research to encourage innovative young investigators in basic biomedical sciences to apply modern knowledge and techniques to basic problems in toxicology and environmental health such as comparative toxicology or specific environmental effects, including diets, on growth and development. One award of up to $100,000 is made for 3 years of support.

Program: Occupational Safety and Health Small Grants
Agency: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 404/639-3343
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Provides non-renewable 1- or 2- year grants of up to $25,000/year to beginning investigators or graduate students for occupational safety and health research. Supports pilot studies to develop or test new methods or techniques, or to analyze previously collected data. Areas of interest include: occupational traumatic injuries, reproductive effects, neurologic and cardiovascular effects, occupational cancers, noise-induced hearing loss, musculoskeletal injuries, dermatologic problems, psychological disorders, and respirator research.

Science/Engineering

Program: Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Office of Naval Technology)
Agency: American Society for Engineering Education, 202/986-8500
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Approximately 40 awards are made to U.S. scientists who have received their doctoral degrees within the past seven years to conduct research at participating Navy centers and laboratories. Applicants should contact the proposed research facility to develop a project addressing a problem of mutual interest to the investigator and the host facility. Appointments are made for one to three years. Stipends range from $36,000 to $42,000, depending on experience. Participating research facilities are listed in program brochure.

Program: Research and Exchange of Information on Nuclear Safety
Agency: Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 301/492-7054
Next Deadline: May 20, 1994

Supports the expansion, exchange and transfer of knowledge, ideas and concepts directed toward the NRC safety research program. Funds professional meetings and conferences and research grants to educational institutions. Individual grants are limited to $100,000 for two years. In FY 94, $817,000 is available for new awards.
