Mississippi State history professor John F. Marszalek, right, is congratulated by Provost Bill McDaniel after the historian recently was named a William L. Giles Distinguished Professor. The title is the highest academic honor the university bestows on faculty members and is based on research, scholarship, outstanding teaching, and service. Marszalek has written two books on Civil War Gen. William T. Sherman, one of which--Sherman: A Soldier's Passion for Order--was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. In addition, he is the recipient of a Hearst Fellowship in American History.
