Two provost candidate interviews slated for next week

Interviews for two candidates for the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs are scheduled for next week.

Dr. William J. Wilhelm, dean of the College of Engineering at The Wichita State University, will be on campus May 1-3.

Dr. Robert A. Altenkirch, dean of the College of Engineering at Mississippi State, will interview May 3-5.

Wilhelm has held his current position at Wichita State since 1979. He also served as director of the university's Center for Productive Enhancement from 1984-86. Before coming to Wichita State, he had taught at West Virginia University since 1967. He chaired the Department of Civil Engineering there from 1975-79.

Wilhelm received bachelor's and master's degrees from Auburn University and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 1968.

He will meet with the general faculty 3-4:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, in the Colvard Union small auditorium. Immediately afterward, he will attend a reception with the general faculty and student and staff leaders in the Union art lounge.

Altenkirch came to Mississippi State in 1988 as dean of engineering. Prior to that, he taught at the University of Kentucky for 13 years, chairing the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1984-88. From 1971-75, he was a graduate instructor at Purdue University.

Altenkirch received a bachelor's degree from Purdue, a master's from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from Purdue in 1975.

He will meet with the general faculty 2:30-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, in the Colvard Union ballroom. From 4-5 p.m., he will attend a reception with the general faculty and student and staff leaders in the same location.

Interviews concluded this week for Dr. Marvin Barker, vice president for academic affairs at Tennessee Technological University, and Dr. Jimmy Solomon, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Mississippi State.

In addition to the sessions with the general faculty, the interview schedule for each candidate includes meetings with President Zacharias, the search committee, the vice presidents, the deans, community leaders, student leaders, academic department heads and directors, representatives of other units reporting to the provost, and alumni and development representatives.
