Summer action program set by Society of Women Engineers

A July program coordinated by the Society of Women Engineers will encourage junior high students to consider engineering as a profession.

The four-day camp July 7-10 will introduce 20 students from around Mississippi to engineering disciplines and to career opportunities, according to Mamie Crawford, SWE co-president. It is the first of what the engineering student organizers hope will become an annual event.

Junior high students will be selected on the basis of competitive essays and teacher recommendations, Crawford said.

"We want to provide plenty of hands-on activities to let students see what is really involved in becoming an engineer."

In addition to a boat-building and sailing competition employing engineering principles, students will learn about the capabilities of the university's National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, the High Voltage Laboratory, Patterson Laboratory, and a computer design lab, among others.

Working with SWE on the project are Robert Altenkirch, dean of engineering; Mary Jasper, Lisa Bostick, and Lisa Redwine of industrial engineering, SWE faculty advisers; Dr. Lesia Crumpton of industrial engineering; and Regina Halpin, coordinator for engineering and sciences education outreach.

For more information, contact Halpin at 325-1360; or Jasper or Bostick at 325-3922.
