Listed below are funding opportunities received from various sources such as the Office of Federal Programs. Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), 325-3994, will assist you in obtaining information and applications necessary for submission to governmental or private sources.

Federal Register available to Mississippi State University via the Internet and Gopher

The Federal Register is now available through May 22, 1994, to all Mississippi State departments with access to the Internet. If you use Gopher or RA or ISIS, simply type 'gopher gopher.counterpoint.com' at the standard prompt. If you are using some other version of gopher you will need to locate the Counterpoint publishing gopher server at counterpoint.com.

Arts/Humanities/International

Program: General Research Grant Program
Agency: American Philosophical Society
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Awards support basic postdoctoral research for at least one year in all areas of knowledge. Grants help defray costs such as travel and the connection of the investigator to objects of research. Maximum award levels range from $4,000 to $5,000. Program has January 1, March 1, July 1, and November 1 application deadlines. Submit requests in writing for materials and information. Program: Folk Arts Program
Agency: National Endowment for the Arts, 202/682-5449
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Makes grants to organizations that present traditional folk arts and artists in festivals, concerts, exhibits, residencies and workshops, or through media, including film, video, recording, radio and still photographs. Awards also support organizations that provide services to the field through conferences, surveys, and assistance to local or state-based programs. The deadlines cited are for required letters of intent.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Drug Abuse Education and Prevention for Runaway and Homeless Youth
Agency: Administration for Children and Families, 202/205-8054
Next Deadline: June 1994

Supports counseling, community education, service coordination and other assistance aimed at preventing or reducing drug abuse among runaway and homeless youth. A 25 percent non-federal match is required. See the May 18, 1993 Federal Register for complete application package for the FY 93 competition. Program expects to announce FY 94 competition in April with a tentative application deadline in June 1994.

Program: Grant Program
Agency: Bradley (Lynde and Harry) Foundation, Inc., 414/291-9915
Next Deadline: July 15, 1994

Primarily gives in Wisconsin, but also supports two national programs. Public Affairs program funds research on national public policy and international and strategic policy research. Education program funds projects in Higher Education (research on the moral, cultural, intellectual, and economic roots of the institutions that form a free society), and Gifted Children (research into how children learn and instruction demonstration programs). Deadlines are 3/15, 7/15, 9/15, and 12/15.

Program: Vocational Education National Cooperative Demonstration Program: Correctional Education Projects
Agency: U.S. Department of Education, 202/205-8974
Next Deadline: July 1994

Supports projects that expand or improve access to quality vocational education programs for individuals in correctional institutions. Projects must involve cooperation between public and private agencies, provide "live work" experiences for prisoners, and include life skills, job skills and literacy training to help individuals adjust from institutional to community settings. In FY 94, about $2 million was available to fund fewer than 10 projects. ED expects to release proposed regulations in April and invite applications in May/June 1994.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Conference Grants on Health Effects of Toxic Substances
Agency: Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 404/639-6206

Program provides partial support for non-federal conferences on disease prevention, health promotion and information/education projects in the following areas: health effects of toxic substances; disease and exposure registries; hazardous substance removal and remediation; emergency response to toxic and environmental disasters; risk communication; disease surveillance; and investigation and research. In FY 94, $250,000 is available to fund 10 awards. See April 1, 1994 Federal Register for details.

Program: Grants-in-Aid
Agency: American Heart Association, 214/706-1453

Supports research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease or to similar fundamental problems. Funding is available in all basic disciplines, such as physiology, biochemistry, and pathology, as well as for epidemiological and clinical investigations that are related to cardiovascular problems. Maximum award is $40,000 per year for a maximum of three years.

Program: NIOSH Special Emphasis Research Career Awards
Agency: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 404/639-3343
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Awards encourage qualified individuals in the early stages of postgraduate careers to develop research interests and skills in occupational safety and health. Nonrenewable three-year awards of up to $50,000 per year in direct costs will be made to researchers, who must commit a minimum of 60 percent of time to the research projects proposed.

Program: Science Education Partnership Award

Supports active biomedical/behavioral scientists in partnerships with educators and other groups to improve student (K-12) and public understanding of the health sciences. The goal of this program is to support the final stages of such partnerships, specifically evaluation and dissemination of well-tested programs (regional or national) so that they can have a significant impact on scientific literacy in the biomedical/behavioral sciences. Science/Engineering

Program: ASA/NCES/NSF Research Fellows Program
Agency: American Statistical Association, 703/684-1221
Next Deadline: July 1, 1994

Fellowships support six months to one year of research at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Applicants should have considerable experience in survey methodology or statistical analysis. Fellows have access to Center data and organizational facilities, including computer equipment, and select a specific research project after appointment. The Center is particularly interested in the application of biostatistical techniques to the analysis of education data and in the construction of price indices for education.

Program: Hosting Scientists and Engineers from the Former Soviet Union
Agency: National Research Council, 202/334-3655
Next Deadline: June 24, 1994

Provides support for American scientists and engineers who will host colleagues from the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the Former Soviet Union for one academic year (up to nine months). Support is targeted for NIS colleagues who have worked in defense-related research and will apply their skills to civilian activities. Scientists with potential to contribute to private sector in home country receive priority. Program also supports initiatives to send U.S. scientists to NIS.
