Listed below are funding opportunities received from various sources such as the Office of Federal Programs. Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), 325-3994, will assist you in obtaining information and applications necessary for submission to governmental or private sources.

Federal Register available to Mississippi State via the Internet and Gopher

The Federal Register and Commerce Business Daily are now available on-line to all Mississippi State departments with access to the Internet. If you use Gopher or RA or ISIS, simply type 'gopher gopher.counterpoint.com' at the standard prompt. If you are using some other version of gopher you will need to locate the Counterpoint publishing gopher server at counterpoint.com.

Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Humanities Projects in Libraries
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities, 202/606-8271
Next Deadline: Aug. 5, 1994

Supports programs to increase public understanding of the humanities through the discovery, interpretation, and greater appreciation of books and other resources in libraries and archives. Projects should address one of the following areas: the appreciation and interpretation of cultural works; the illumination of historical ideas, figures, and events; or an understanding of the humanities disciplines. Two types of support are offered: planning grants (August 5, 1994 deadline) and implementation grants (September 16, 1994 deadline).

Program: Abe Fellowship Program

Postdoctoral fellowships lasting up to one year support research in the social sciences and humanities by U.S. and Japanese researchers on global issues, problems common to advanced industrial societies, and the improvement of U.S.-Japan relations. Program is sponsored by the Social Science Research Council, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

Program: Advancement Grants
Agency: National Endowment for the Arts, 202/682-5436

Arts organizations are eligible to receive Planning/Technical Assistance grants and subsequent matching Advancement grants to develop strategies that will eliminate deficiences in organizational management and help achieve long-range goals. In FY 95 applications will be accepted in the following NEA program areas: Arts in Education, Design Arts, Museum, Music Presenting and Commissioning, and Theater. Notice of intent to apply is encouraged to be submitted by August 3.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Training Personnel (IDEA): Careers in Special Education
Agency: U.S. Department of Education, 202/205-9554
Next Deadline: September 1994

Supports preservice training of personnel for careers in special education. FY 94 priorities were promoting full qualifications, work in rural areas, post-school transition assistance, and improving services for minorities. See the June 3, 1993 Federal Register for details regarding the FY 94 competition. OSEP expects to announce the FY 95 competition in July 1994 with a tentative application deadline of September 1994.

Program: Training Personnel (IDEA): Leadership Personnel
Agency: U.S. Department of Education, 202/205-9554
Next Deadline: September 1994

Supports doctoral and postdoctoral level preservice training of professional personnel such as supervisors, teacher trainers, researchers and administrators. In FY 94, 20 grants ranging from $75,000 to $125,000 were awarded. See the June 3, 1993 Federal Register for details. OSEP expects to announce the FY 95 competition in July 1994 with a tentative application deadline of September 1994.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Researcher Starter Grants in Pharmacology
Agency: Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association Foundation, 202/835-3470
Next Deadline: Sept. 1, 1994

Provides financial support to individuals beginning their independent research careers. Areas of research interest include pharmacology, pharmacology-morphology, clinical pharmacology, drug toxicology, and research to develop and extend the general principles of pharmaceutics. Applicants with academic rank of instructor or assistant professor and investigators at doctoral level with equivalent positions are eligible to apply. About 16 awards of $12,500 per year for two years will be made.

Program: Substance Abuse Prevention Conference Grants
Agency: Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, 301/443-1584
Next Deadline: Sept. 10, 1994

Supports regional or national conferences to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information on the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. Priority is given to projects demonstrating the potential for wide dissemination of current knowledge, new technologies, problem-solving techniques, and information networks. The maximum award amount is $50,000 per conference. Consult your state point of contact, identified in the application kit (call 301/468-2600 to order). Science/Engineering

Program: Basic Research in Behavioral and Social Sciences
Agency: Army Research Institute for Behavioral and Social Sciences, 703/274-8641
Next Deadline: Aug. 10, 1994

Supports new, fundamental research in behavioral science leading to principles that will apply to improving effectiveness of Army personnel. General program areas are learning and cognitive basis for advancing training technology, individual and group performance processes, and special projects. Program: Grant Program
Agency: Fats and Proteins Research Foundation, Inc., 309/829-7744
Next Deadline: Sept. 15, 1994

Supports research concerning the utilization of animal by-products processed by the rendering industry, such as blood meal, meat and bone meal, tallow, hydrolyzed hair, and feathermeals. Recently funded projects include studies on ecological aspects of the rendering process, and chemical, microbiological and nutritional studies.

Program: Sloan Basic Research Fellowships
Agency: Sloan (Alfred P.) Foundation, 212/649-164
Next Deadline: Sept. 15, 1994

Ninety two-year research fellowships of $30,000 are awarded annually to stimulate fundamental research by promisiing young scholars in physics chemistry, mathematics, computer science, neuroscience, and economics. Candidates must be members of a college or university faculty and are nominated by department heads or other senior scholars. Deadline cited is for receipt of nominations.
