

Federal Register Available to Mississippi State via the Internet and Gopher
The Federal Register and Commerce Business Daily are now available on-line to all Mississippi State departments with access to the Internet. If you use Gopher or RA or ISIS, simply type 'gopher gopher.counterpoint.com' at the standard prompt. If you are using some other version of gopher you will need to locate the Counterpoint publishing gopher server at counterpoint.com.

Supports individual U.S. performers or U.S. performing arts groups who have been invited to international festivals, but need additional support, such as travel and per diem expenses. Program is particularly interested in proposals that reflect the cultural diversity of the U.S. and involve events in areas of the world where U.S. work is rarely performed. Grants to individuals range from $500 to $2,000, and grants to organizations range from $2,000 to $25,000.
Program: Fellowships in the Humanities

Fellowships provide up to $20,000 for research in the humanities, including philosophy; languages, literature and linguistics; law; archaeology; art history and musicology; history; anthropology; and religion. Proposals with a predominantly humanistic emphasis in economics, geography, political science, psychology, sociology, and the natural sciences will also be considered. Fellows must devote a minimum of six and a maximum of twelve months to their research.
Defrays cost of hosting a scientist or business manager from the former Soviet Union for three- to six-month internships in the U.S. Scientists will apply skills in areas such as defense conversion, medicine and energy. The Commerce Department will interview and recommend eligible interns. For-profit or non-profit corporations, associations, organizations, and other entities are eligible to apply as hosts. Grants support research on the causes, effects and measures for alleviation of unemployment at the national, state and local levels. FY 94 priorities are earnings replacement; structural change and the distribution of earnings; family employment issues; workforce quality and the organization of work; economic development and the labor market; and international comparative research in labor markets. Maximum award level is $45,000, with an additional $25,000 available for data collection.
Three-year fellowships support junior scientists (doctorate received no more than 10 years ago) for behavioral or biomedical research in the United Kingdom. The first two years of the fellowship will be spent in collaboration with a British lab; scientists return to the U.S. for the third year of the fellowship.
Program: Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training

Supports mental health research training for honors third and fourth-year undergraduates in four-year colleges, universities and health professional schools with substantial numbers of underrepresented minorities. The goal is to prepare these students to compete successfully for entry into graduate programs. See the August 27, 1993 NIH Guide for details. A new announcement should appear in the NIH Guide by summer 1994. This program is equivalent to the Minority Access to Research Careers Program for Honors Undergraduates offered at other NIH institutes.
Program: Research Grants on Alcoholic Beverages

Supports research in the following areas of special interest: the effects of the moderate use of alcohol; factors influencing the transition from moderate to excessive drinking; mechanisms underlying the biomedical effects of alcohol; alcohol and youth; alcohol and traffic accidents; and alcohol and work-related issues. Emphasis is placed on alcoholism prevention. Approximately 20 awards of up to $40,000 per year for one year are available.
Funds projects that provide college students with hands-on experience in most NSF-supported disciplines. Supports two types of awards: REU Sites grants support independent projects to initiate and conduct research projects involving undergraduate students; REU Supplements add a small number of undergraduate students to an ongoing NSF research grant. Deadline cited is for REU Sites proposals. Supplemental proposals are due at any time. Contact the REU director in the relevant discipline for additional information.
Program: Basic Research in Conservation and Restoration Biology

This special competition supports fundamental research projects aimed at elucidating principles that underlie the conservation and restoration of biological diversity. Topics of investigation include: naturally occurring ecosystems, the genetic, behavioral and physiological processes occurring within them, and the human activities affecting them. Proposals may address any level of evolutionary, ecological, physiological or behavioral analysis.

Awards of $75,000 per year for three years are made to U.S. citizens who hold tenure track positions at U.S. colleges and universities and have held their Ph.D.s for five years or less, to conduct research within the broad scope of naval interests described in the ONR Broad Agency Announcement. Applications must be submitted through university officials and demonstrate a strong institutional commitment to the researcher as a prospective teacher and to the project.
