Reflector pulls in MPA awards

The Mississippi State student newspaper and eight staff members finished among the top ranks in collegiate competition sponsored by the Mississippi Press Association.

The Reflector won first place in the layout and design category and second place in general excellence.

Staff members took first place awards for editorial cartoons, sports features, and single retail advertisements, as well as two second-place awards, five first-place awards, and one honorable mention in various categories.

The honors were announced at the association's recent summer convention in Tupelo. All student entries were for the 1993-94 school year.

The Reflector is a twice-weekly publication with circulation of 13,000. Among its former news staff members are David Langford, Associated Press senior writer in New York City; Andrew Reese, former head of United Press International's Jackson bureau; Jim Buck Ross, state commissioner of agriculture and commerce; and Sid Salter, editor of the Scott County Times in Forest and a syndicated columnist.

The 1993-94 editor was Becky Bane of Brandon. The 1994-95 editor is Terri Tabor of Louisville, who served as news editor last year.
