Area teachers learn computing skills at Mississippi State

Twelve area high school teachers have learned supercomputing applications ranging from spreadsheets to use of the Internet in a two-week intensive course at Mississippi State.

The first Mississippi Academy of Computational Science and Supercomputing, which ended recently, was sponsored by the university's National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center. Additional support was provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station.

"The purpose is to give teachers the skills to use computer technology in the high school environment," said Dr. Jerry Rogers, education coordinator at the ERC.

Participants, primarily math and science teachers, were introduced to a computer programming language, to visualization technologies, graphing calculators, and a mathematics software package. They will take the calculator and software package back to their home schools.

The academy is based on a similar Alabama program several of the participants attended last year.
