Grants are made to institutions to host a visiting scholar from abroad for all or part of an academic year. Guest scholars may be drawn from the humanities, social sciences or professional specializations with a strong international focus. Awards provide roundtrip international travel for the guest scholar, a monthly maintenance allowance, and incidental allowances for books, local travel and other services related to the visit. The host institution is expected to share some of the costs.
Fellowships of $15,000 support dissertation research by students interested in careers in educational research. Topics should center generally on education, and may touch on issues of socialization, economics or cultural knowledge. About 30 fellowships are awarded each year.

Provides grants to conduct research and studies designed to strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies, and other related fields. In FY 95, the Department expects to make approximately 15 awards averaging just over $95,000 each. See the June 10, 1994 Federal Register for details.
Provides non-renewable 1- or 2- year grants of up to $25,000/year to beginning investigators or graduate students for occupational safety and health research. Supports pilot studies to develop or test new methods or techniques, or to analyze previously collected data. Areas of interest include: occupational traumatic injuries, reproductive effects, neurologic and cardiovascular effects, occupational cancers, noise-induced hearing loss, musculoskeletal injuries, dermatologic problems, psychological disorders, and respirator research.
Program: Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship Program

Six one-year fellowships allow “mid-career” faculty from health and health-related professions to work in Washington, DC with national health policy makers. Fellows work primarily with Congressional offices and committees, and are paid annual stipends equal to their salaries, up to $50,000 per year. Deadline cited is for nominations made by CEOs of eligible institutions (those with academic health centers, medical schools or health professional schools) to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine.
Provides funds to academic institutions to give young faculty members in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering release time to develop their potential both as teachers and scholars, in accordance with plans that have been approved by their institutions. Universities may nominate one eligible individual per institution. Grants are for $60,000 and are to be utilized within five years of the award.

Agency: Eppley Foundation

Provides support for research in advanced scientific subjects in the biological and physical sciences. Grants are made to recognized educational and charitable organizations in support of postdoctoral projects. Grants will not support research on cancer, cardiology or AIDS. The Foundation is interested in supporting research for which federal support is not available. Grants of up to $25,000 support one year of research. The Foundation makes about 12 awards each year.

Administered by NRC on behalf of the Ford Foundation, fellowships provide support to African Americans, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Mexican Americans/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders and Puerto Ricans to increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on college and university faculties. Fellowships are awarded in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical and biological sciences, or interdisciplinary programs.
