

Jazz great Billy Taylor to kick off 1994-95 Lyceum Series
Jazz pianist Billy Taylor, who hosts a jazz segment on CBS' Sunday Morning, performs Sept. 13 at Mississippi State, the first guest artist in the university's annual performing arts series.
Known as a performer, composer, recording artist, and radio and television personality, Taylor makes his campus appearance with bassist Charles "Chip" Jackson and percussionist Carl Allen.
The performance by the Billy Taylor Trio is at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Hall Auditorium.
Also scheduled for the 1994-95 Lyceum Series are:
- Klaas Hofstra as Rembrandt, Oct. 18. The one-man show presents the famous artist at age 63, reflecting on his life, his work and the myths surrounding him. Hofstra appeared at Mississippi State in 1991 in a production of "Vincent."
- London Chamber Orchestra, Christopher Warren-Green, music director, Nov. 14. The oldest chamber group of its kind in Great Britain, the London Chamber Orchestra is making its debut tour of the United States this fall. It presents a full program of classical music by such composers as Mozart, Vivaldi, and Tchaikovsky.
- Second Samuel, A Southern Comedy, Feb. 16, 1995. In this play by Pamela Parker, the audience experiences the small Georgia town of Second Samuel in the 1950s. Parker's comedy Grass Windows was produced at the Nat Horne Theater in New York in 1991.
- New York Theatre Ballet, March 7, 1995. One of the country's most accomplished chamber ballet companies, the New York Theatre Ballet will present a program that includes "Magic Rose," a tale of Beauty and the Beast, and a classical mixed repertory.
- Milagro Vargas, mezzo-soprano, April 11, 1995. Vargas presents a diverse repertoire from Bach and Mahler to Kurt Weill. She has performed with the American Composers Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Beethoven Halle Orchestra, the Residentie Orkest (the Hague), and the St. Lukes Chamber Orchestra. She was a soloist with the Stuttgart Opera from 1983-88 and sang a variety of roles in Europe from 1988-92.
