Homework can help avoid mistakes when buying computer system

School-age children born to the computer age are as comfortable with a mouse or keyboard as an earlier generation was with scissors and paste.

But unlike the school tools of a generation ago, computers represent major financial commitments.

"My advice to parents is that computers are an outstanding educational tool if they can afford the technology," said Dr. William J. Sumrall of the College of Education.

Sumrall, a professor of curriculum and instruction, said that children adapt easily to technology, and the earlier they get started, the better.

Among available resources are encyclopedias on CD-ROM, desktop publishing programs, spreadsheets, graphing tools, and a variety of software for specific educational purposes.
