Homework can help avoid mistakes when buying computer system

But unlike the school tools of a generation ago, computers represent major financial commitments.

"My advice to parents is that computers are an outstanding educational tool if they can afford the technology," said Dr. William J. Sumrall of the College of Education.

Sumrall, a professor of curriculum and instruction, said that children adapt easily to technology, and the earlier they get started, the better.

Among available resources are encyclopedias on CD-ROM, desktop publishing programs, spreadsheets, graphing tools, and a variety of software for specific educational purposes.

Sumrall offers these wise-shopper suggestions:

• Don't be influenced by the salesperson's preference. Talk to a number of people for suggestions and recommendations.
• Set a price limit. You can get a good system for $2,000, including a modem.
• Buy through a reputable dealer. These can be identified through a variety of computer magazines. Most will give advice about how to get your computer on-line. A dealer with computer expertise also can respond to problems and help troubleshoot.
• Choose a product that can be upgraded. By buying smart, you can invest in a system that can change with new technologies.
