New provost to deliver faculty convocation address

Mississippi State's new provost will be the keynote speaker Aug. 19 for the university's fall semester welcoming program for faculty and professional staff.

Dr. Derek J. Hodgson, who also is beginning his tenure as vice president for academic affairs, will speak at the faculty convocation. The 90-minute program begins at 9 a.m. in the University Theatre of McComas Hall.

Following the address, presentations will be made for the 1994 John Grisham Faculty Excellence Awards and the Grisham Master Teacher Awards.

Hodgson, former research vice president at the University of Wyoming, began his duties Aug. 1. A native of England, he is a chemistry professor who holds degrees from Harvard and Northwestern universities.

At the convocation's conclusion, an orientation meeting for new employees will get under way in the McComas Hall lobby. President Donald Zacharias will give a personal welcome to the university family, after which participants will have the opportunity to visit with vice presidents of the various university divisions.

Fall semester classes begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 22.
