Former employee leaves substantial sum to university

A longtime secretary in the Department of Agriculture Education and Experimental Statistics has left $123,000 in her will to support student scholarships in the department.

Emmie Williams of Starkville, who was a secretary to department head Dr. O.L. Snowden for 30 years, died in August 1993. While her estate gift was a surprise to many, her devotion to the department wasn't.

"This department was her life," said Dr. Walter N. Taylor, head of the department. "She devoted her entire life to making it successful."

Taylor said the gift will establish the Emmie Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund in Ag Education, with the interest earned each year going to support scholarships.

"Since Ms. Williams was concerned with students with financial problems, a small amount will be set aside annually to assist those students who have unforeseen financial difficulties."
