Arts/Humanities/International

Program: American Fellowships -- Selected Professions
Agency: American Association of University Women Educational Foundation
Next Deadline: NOV 15, 1994

Focus Profession Fellowships assist underrepresented minority women in business, law, and medicine. Science/Technology Fellowships support women in the fields of architecture, computer science, engineering, and mathematics. Applicants must be full-time students who are ready to begin the final year of their degree programs (M.B.A., J.D., M.D., or DO or MA) in the fall following submission of their applications.

Program: Awards for Study in Scandinavia
Agency: American Scandinavian Foundation
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1994

Awards fellowships and short-term grants for graduate and faculty study or research in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland. Priority is usually given to candidates at the dissertation level. Fellowship stipend is $15,000; short-term grants are for $2,500.

Program: Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities
Agency: Cornell University, Society for the Humanities
Next Deadline: OCT 21, 1994

Supports Junior Fellowships in residence at Cornell with a stipend of $32,000. Fellows should hold Ph.D.s in the humanities and have one or more years of college teaching experience. In addition to writing and study, fellows are encouraged to lead a seminar. The research theme for the 1995-96 academic year is "Self, Subject and Agent."

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: NOV, 1994

Awards grants to academic departments, programs and other academic units that offer graduate degree courses. The program allows grantees to provide fellowships to graduate students with financial need who plan to teach or conduct research in areas of national need. The Department hopes to publish information on the FY 95 competition in late September 1994.

Program: Business and International Education Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: NOV 07, 1994

Supports projects promoting linkages between IHEs and American businesses engaged in international trade. Projects should enhance the international academic programs of the IHE, and provide appropriate services to allow the business entity to expand its capacity to engage in commerce abroad. Federal funds can account for no more than 50% of project costs, and applications must include a formal agreement between the IHE and a specific business entity. ED has over $1.4 million available in FY 95. See the June 10, 1994 Federal Register for details.

Program: Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: NOV 04, 1994

Provides grants to institutions to plan, develop, and carry out comprehensive programs to improve their undergraduate international studies and foreign languages instruction in the U.S. For FY 95, a competitive priority will be given to IHEs that require entering students to have had two years of foreign language instruction or each graduating student to have earned two years of postsecondary credit in a foreign language. Approximately $1.9 million is available for awards. See the June 10, 1994 Federal Register for details.

Health/Mental Health

Program: NIOSH Special Emphasis Research Career Awards
Agency: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1994

Awards encourage qualified individuals in the early stages of postgraduate careers to develop research interests and skills in occupational safety and health. Nonrenewable three-year awards of up to $50,000 per year in direct costs will be made to researchers, who must commit a minimum of 60 percent of time to the research projects proposed.

Science/Engineering

Program: Grants in Anthropology
Agency: Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1994

Supports research in all branches of anthropology and related disciplines. Projects should use a cross-cultural, historical, biological, and/or linguistic approach to the study of human origins, development, and variation. Special consideration is given to projects integrating two or more subfields of anthropology. Regular grants provide up to $12,000 in support, and a limited number of postdoctoral fellowships are available. Conference support is also available.

Program: Pre-Freshmen Enrichment Program (PREP)
Agency: U.S. Department of Energy
Next Deadline: OCT 30, 1994

Supports projects at institutions that grant baccalaureate math, science and engineering degrees, or that have cooperative programs with degree granting institutions, to target minorities and women in grades six to ten and provide them experiences designed to motivate and prepare them for careers in engineering, math and science. Awards amount to $42,000 for two years and are distributed in $21,000 increments. DOE expects to announce FY 95 competition in August with an October 1994 application deadline.

Program: Augmentation Awards for Science and Engineering Research Training (AASERT)
Agency: U.S. Department of Defense
Next Deadline: NOV 08, 1994

Designed to increase the number of high-quality scientists available to perform research in areas of interest to DOD, program offers supplemental three-year awards to currently funded DOD investigators to add one or two additional graduate students. Program is supported by each DOD agency. Also request materials from: Navy, 703/696-4111; Air Force, 202/767-4969; or Advanced Research Projects Agency, 703/696-2241.
