Dr. John E. Gunter, dean of the School of Forest Resources and director of the Center for Integrated Forest Management Strategies at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, will begin his new duties April 1. He replaces Dr. Warren S. Thompson, who retired in October.
Gunter received his bachelor's degree in forestry from Southern Illinois University, and a master's in forest management, a master's in business management, and a doctorate in forest management and economics, all from Michigan State University.
"John Gunter is well known and respected by a broad segment of those interested in the forests of the South and their associated fish and wildlife resources," said Dr. Rodney Foil, vice president for agriculture, forestry, and veterinary medicine at Mississippi State. "He will help the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Forestry build on the substantial foundation and reputation established under the leadership of dean emeritus Warren Thompson.
"Dr. Gunter gave leadership to innovative and highly successful educational programs while at the University of Georgia and moved the University of Arkansas at Monticello to a new level of service and accountability."
At Arkansas-Monticello, Gunter was credited with helping establish the Center for Integrated Forest Management Strategies, while serving as principal administrator for the school's and the center's teaching, research, and outreach programs. He also has held teaching, research, and extension positions at the University of Georgia, Michigan State University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Gunter has served the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service as a forest economist and forest finance taxation specialist, and as an assistant forester and assistant district forester for Georgia-Pacific Corp.
He has authored or co-authored numerous books, articles, and other publications, and has presented papers at conferences, symposiums, and meetings.
He is a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters, and has received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University, the Wise Owl Award for Exceptional Meritorious Service and the President's Award from the Georgia Forestry Association, and the Award of Excellence from the Southern Extension Forest Resource Specialists.
Gunter has consulted for such groups as Packaging Corporation of America, Wisconsin Department of Justice, and Washington State University. He also has obtained nearly $1.4 million in federal and private grants.
