

The council provides lifelong educational and intellectual opportunities for adult Mississippians and creates forums for dialogue on significant issues facing society. It is funded by Congress through the National Endowment for the Humanities and through private donations.
White, a member of the English Department at Mississippi State for more than 20 years, has directed the UHP since 1984.
A longtime Mississippi Humanities Council program participant and evaluator, he gave the keynote address at the recent MHC awards dinner.
Twenty-two Mississippians serve as volunteers on the council, five appointed by the governor and the rest elected by the board. Half are academic and half are public appointees.
