Association of Colleges meets here Oct. 22-24


A former NASA administrator, an authority on community college leadership, and an expert in using technology to enhance instruction are the featured speakers for the 62nd annual Mississippi Association of Colleges Junior/Senior Conference planned for Oct. 22-24 at Mississippi State.

The conference will focus on the opportunities and challenges presented by technology. The theme is "The Electronic Revolution in Higher Education: New Systems, New Techniques, New Results." Up to 300 public and private university and college administrators and faculty members from throughout the state are expected to attend.

Faculty and staff may obtain more information or register for the conference by contacting the Division of Continuing Education at 325-1457. The registration fee is $85, which includes all conference activities.

Former NASA administrator Richard Truly speaks at the 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, session at the Wise Center Auditorium on "Education and Technology_Searching for the Right Mix." Truly, a retired admiral, headed NASA from 1989 to 1992. He is now vice president of Georgia Institute of Technology and director of the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

Bonnie Bracey, teacher-in-residence at the Arlington Career Center of the Arlington, Va., public schools, is a research assistant at George Mason University. She speaks at the 2:30 p.m. Monday session at the Wise Center. Bracey specializes in geography, science, Shakespeare and the use of technology to create learning environments that are supportive of new learning styles. She has won a variety of teaching awards and serves on the National Information Infrastructure Advisory Council.

Dr. George Vaughan, associate director of the Academy for Community College Leadership, Advancement, Innovation and Modeling (ACCLAIM) at North Carolina State University speaks at the 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, session at Bost Auditorium on "Leadership: Old Concepts, New Interpretations." Vaughan was a community college president for 17 years and has written several books on community college leadership. His presentation is made possible by the Phil Hardin Foundation of Meridian.

Concurrent sessions on Monday and Tuesday will focus on topics such as administrative technology, utilizing instructional technology, technology planning, faculty issues in technology, instructional television, and managing Internet resources.

Several Mississippi State faculty and staff members are among the speakers. President Donald Zacharias, who serves this year as MAC president, will open the conference and preside at some sessions.

Danny Kemp of the Computing Center will talk on administrative technology. Dr. Glen Hendren of the counselor education department will speak on utilizing instructional technology. Dr. Dan Brook of the technology and education department will lead a session on technology planning. Dr. Kathleen Olivieri of Continuing Education will discuss faculty issues in technology. David Hutto of the University Television Center will lead the session on instructional television technology.

A recent Mississippi State graduate and the 1995 SEC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, April Ecke, will be the speaker at the Halbrook Awards Luncheon during Monday's conference schedule. Mike Rackley of the Computing Center will discuss Internet resources. Dr. Sandra Harpole of the Physics and Astronomy Department will discuss faculty involvement with technology.

Dean of Continuing Education Bob Leiter chaired the planning committee for the conference.

Conference participants will have an opportunity to tour the University Television Center, College of Veterinary Medicine, Templeton Music Museum and Engineering Research Center. The conference begins on Sunday evening, Oct. 22, with a reception at Mitchell Memorial Library.
