A program of dance that includes choreography by Alvin Ailey and Agnes de Mille will be featured when the North Carolina Dance Theatre performs here Oct. 24.
The 7:30 p.m. performance in Lee Hall Auditorium is part of the university's 1995-96 Lyceum Series. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens by request, and $3 for children 3-12. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
Founded in 1970 at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the dance company is celebrating its 26th anniversary with the current season. It has earned recognition as one of the South's premier arts organizations.
Among repertoire selections are a ballet choreographed by George Balanchine to Tchaikovsky's Third Piano Concerto and a Japanese wind dance choreographed by the group's artistic director, Salvatore Aiello. Agnes de Mille's "Rodeo," set to the music of American composer Aaron Copland, and Alvin Ailey's "Feast of Ashes," set to the Spanish rhythms of Carlos Surinach, round out the program.
Artistic director Salvatore Aiello began his career with the Joffrey Ballet. He was a charter member of the Harkness Ballet, where he was named a soloist in 1967. From 1971-78, he performed with Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, where he was a principal dancer. His choreography includes critically acclaimed versions of "The Rite of Spring," "The Nutcracker" and "Coppelia."
Season tickets for the Lyceum Series are still available. Additional performances include Chanticleer, a classical vocal ensemble, Jan. 24; A Festival of Strings, Feb. 8; "Mahalia," March 5; and Jeff Tyzik and the jazz ensemble Spectrum, April 16.
