Award-winning Texas poet to speak here


Poet, college professor and former Air Force pilot Walter McDonald will read from his works Oct. 24 at Mississippi State.

McDonald, director of creative writing at Texas Tech University, will be featured at the 3:45 p.m. free public program in the Colvard Union faculty lounge.

His visit to campus is sponsored by the English Department and University Honors Program.

In addition to heading Texas Tech's creative writing program, McDonald is the poetry editor of the Texas Tech University Press. He also holds the Paul Whitfield Horn Professorship of English at the Lubbock school.

His most recent work, "Counting Survivors," was released by the University of Pittsburgh Press in April. Poems from the book were featured in such publications as The American Scholar, The Atlantic, The Nation, New York Review of Books, and Paris Review.

Other recent McDonald books include "The Flying Dutchman" (Ohio State University Press), "After the Noise of Saigon" (University of Massachusetts Press) and "Night Landings" (HarperCollins).

Three other books won Western Heritage Awards from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame: "Rafting the Brazos," "The Digs in Escondido Canyon" and "All that Matters: The Texas Plains in Photographs and Poems."

McDonald also has a book of fiction to his credit. "A Band of Brothers: Stories from Vietnam" was published by Texas Tech University Press.
