Harkness appointed chair of national council


Dr. John E. Harkness was appointed chair of the Council on Accreditation of the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

Harkness is a professor and university laboratory animal veterinarian with the College of Veterinary Medicine.

AAALAC, founded in 1965, promotes high standards of animal care and use, strives to improve laboratory animal well-being and enhances life sciences research through the accreditation process.

Harkness is a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, of which he has served as president, and holds memberships in the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.

He received his veterinary degree from Michigan State University in 1968. Harkness was awarded his master's degree in laboratory animal medicine in 1976 and his master's in higher and adult education in 1977, both from the University of Missouri. He has been associated with Mississippi State as a tenured professor since 1984.

The AAALAC is widely accepted and currently has more than 600 programs accredited worldwide. These programs include academic institutions, as well as commercial, government and nonprofit organizations.
