Restraining aggressive student behavior subject of monograph by educators

A monograph detailing an approach to help teachers control aggressive students was recently completed by three Mississippi State educators.

Jack Blendinger, professor of educational leadership, Sandra Devlin, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, and Frank Elrod, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, wrote "Controlling Aggressive Students."

Blendinger said the 45-page book uses a story format to present different approaches to restraining aggressive student behavior. These approaches range from improving a student's interpersonal skills to restraint techniques.

"Called a fastback, the book is intended for both pre-service and practicing public school educators," he said. Both teachers and administrators will benefit."

Prior to joining the Mississippi State faculty, Blendinger served as a teacher, principal and superintendent in public schools in California, Colorado and Oregon.

Devlin has taught students with learning and behavioral problems at the middle school and high school levels and has worked with disabled adults in vocational settings.

Elrod has extensive experience working with adolescents who have severe behavior problems and are involved in youth gang activities.

The three authors dedicated the fastback to the memory of Herbert H. Handley, a Mississippi State distinguished professor of education emeritus and Phi Beta Kappan, who died in 1992.

Fastbacks are published by Phi Delta Kappa Foundation, Bloomington, Ind., to promote excellence in research, service and leadership. The small books are internationally popular with the education profession because of their brief, but authoritative, treatment of current issues in education.

The foundation generally publishes 10,000 copies of a specific fastback title for distribution throughout the world and has published nearly seven million since the program's inception in 1968.

Eight members of the university's College of Education are PDK fastback authors. Besides Blendinger, Devlin and Elrod, other authors include: Linda Cornelius, associate professor of educational technology; Vince McGrath, associate professor of curriculum and instruction; Cindy Rose, associate professor of curriculum and instruction; Linda T. Jones, professor of educational leadership and director of clinical/field-based experiences; and Ned Lovell, professor and head of educational leadership.
