Arts/Humanities/International

Program: NIJ Small Grants Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice
Next Deadline: DEC 15, 1995
Supports research projects on violence; drugs and alcohol; consequences; crime prevention; improving law enforcement and criminal justice system; and developing new technology. Grants range in size from $1,000 to $50,000, with an average award of $25,000. Call 1-800-851-3420 for application kit.

Program: Vocational Rehabilitation Services Special Projects and Demonstrations
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: DEC 05, 1995
Supports projects to improve services to individuals with severe disabilities. In FY 96, RSA will support special projects and demonstrations in vocational rehabilitation services and in transitional rehabilitation services, with competitive priority going to applicants that will provide program services in an empowerment zone or enterprise community. Program: Programs to Encourage Minority Students to Become Teachers
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: NOV 17, 1995
Supports projects to identify minority students at the secondary level and encourage them to enter teacher training programs. This is a new program funded under Title IV of the 1992 HEA Amendments, but it grew out of FIPSE's Minority Teacher Training Project. There are two categories of awards: partnership grants, which must include at least one IHE and other state or local agencies/organizations; and placement grants, which go only to IHEs with schools of education. Program: Harry S. Truman Scholarships
Agency: Truman (Harry S.) Scholarship Foundation
Next Deadline: DEC 01, 1995
Awards extend through three years of graduate study for a maximum stipend of $30,000. Provides scholarships to college juniors preparing for careers in public service. Up to three candidates may be nominated by any college or university. Deadline cited is for receipt of all documentation in support of nominations. See the August 22, 1994 Federal Register for final rule governing the program.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Dissertation Fellowships
Agency: United States Institute of Peace
Next Deadline: DEC 01, 1995
Supports one-year dissertation fellowships for students who have completed all requirements for their degree, except the dissertation, by the start of the fellowship. Dissertation research must advance the state of the knowledge about international peace and conflict management. The annual stipend is $14,000.

Program: Newcombe Dissertation Fellowships
Agency: Wilson (Woodrow) National Fellowship Foundation
Next Deadline: DEC 12, 1995
Dissertation fellowships support the study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences. Topics include: philosophy and religion; the ethical implications of foreign policy; the values determining political decisions; moral codes of other cultures; and religious or ethical values as reflected in history and literature. Applicants must be doctoral candidates with all course work completed. Stipend is $14,000 per year. Applications must be requested by November 17, 1995.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Fellowships for U.S. Scientists Going Abroad
Agency: Fogarty International Center
Next Deadline: DEC 05, 1995
Fellowships funded by ten countries (France, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan) allow biomedical or behavioral scientists who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to conduct collaborative research in the foreign labs. Candidates can apply to only one of these programs during any given year. Requirements vary among countries. Contact FIC for application materials.

Program: Small Grant Program
Agency: National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
Next Deadline: DEC 21, 1995
Provides support for pilot research on disorders of hearing, balance/vestibular, speech, voice, language, smell, and taste. Program is designed to support basic and clinical scientists with limited research experience. Grants are for $25,000 per year for up to two years and are nonrenewable. Investigators are expected to seek further NIH research support through an R01 or FIRST award.

Science/Engineering

Program: Centennial Research Fellowships
Agency: American Mathematical Society
Next Deadline: DEC 01, 1995
Awards postdoctoral fellowships to individuals who received their Ph.D.s between January 1, 1984 and December 31, 1989 and who are below the academic rank of professor. Provides $43,900 for nine months of full-time research or up to two years of half-time research. North American citizenship or permanent residency is required.

Program: Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: DEC 01, 1995
Target Date - proposals may be submitted at any time.
Supports research on the chemical, genetic, and cellular processes underlying biological phenomena, through three programs: Biochemistry and Molecular Structure and Function; Cell Biology; and Genetics and Nucleic Acids.6
