Pruett wins career research award

Dr. Steve Pruett of Biological Sciences was recently presented a research award by the National Institutes of Health.

Pruett received the Research Career Development Award, a five-year research grant allowing him to continue his study of alcohol's effect on the immune system. His work also will delve into how the nervous and endocrine systems interact with alcohol.

"Alcohol affects these systems greatly," he said. "Some of what the alcohol does to them may relate to what it does to the immune system."

In addition, because pollutants can affect the immune system, Pruett is working on an Environmental Protection Agency project in which he is making statistical models of the system.

He hopes his work will show how even small changes in the body's immune system affect its ability to resist infection.

Pruett said the NIH award judges "not only the progress I'm making in my research, but it also judges and rewards the department and the university's research environment."
