The seminar is open to all faculty, staff and students who have interests in careers in the biomedical engineering field. It is hosted by Mississippi State's Biological Engineering Department and the Bioengineering Society.
Presenters are Ernest M. Stokely and Linda C. Lucas, both distinguished professors in the UAB Biomedical Engineering Department. They will discuss biomaterials, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, and imaging (MRI, CAT scan).
The seminar is set for 12:30-2 p.m. in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall.
Stokely earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Mississippi State in 1959 and his doctorate in biomedical engineering in 1972 from Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSMC).
He currently chairs the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UAB and is associate professor of computer and information sciences. Previously, Stokely was clinical professor of radiology and chair of the UTSMC portion of a joint graduate program in biomedical engineering. In 1977, Stokely spent one year at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he was involved with the Computer Science Department.
He also served on a number of review panels for the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Whitaker Foundation. He was senior engineer and member of the technical staff at Texas Instruments in Dallas. Stokely has written more than 120 publications in the medical imaging area.
Lucas received her undergraduate degree in materials engineering in 1979 and her doctorate in biomedical engineering in 1982, both from the UAB. She was one of the Outstanding Young Women of America in 1988, and won the UAB Women's Center Award for Outstanding Woman Faculty Member in 1994.
She is also a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation Faculty Award for Women Scientists and Engineers. Lucas has published numerous articles and chapters in biomaterial/biocompatibility areas of biomedical engineering.
